I was looking at new gas pump globes. Are 15 inch diameter globes oringial? When would a 13.5 vs. a 15 inch globe be used (visible pump vs. newer models pump?).

Thanks for the info, I am sure this is a newbie question.

There are 15 and 13.5 originals and both are reproduced. Both where used on visible pumps as well. I personally like the 15 on visible, but if your restoring a pump do what you want.

Originals only for me. Always looking for Simpson oil, Super A, and MFA oil cans and globes.

IMO the 15" & 16 1/2" belong on the visibles-
smaller globes 13 1/2" look funny on the tall pumps & vice a versa.. cool

13.5" globes should stay with the electric pumps and all visable pumps should have the 15" or 16.5" globes... I've tried sitting different globes on different period pumps and once you stand back ... it becomes apparent to see...
cheers

Just for the record Pierce Pennant made one 13.5 globe and it was used on a visable, maybe more but only one found to date. If you are doing a restoration company branded ,correct signage etc, and correct to the years pump was produced then it takes a little effort to know what is correct.

15 in,or bigger looks funny as heck to me on a short computer pump, such as a Tok 39.

Some Visible pump were still being made in 1947, long after most 1pc, 16.5 & 15" globes were phased out. So having a 13.5" Glass Body or Plastic Capco is still correct for those pumps.

It's YOUR Pump, do as you wish. Someday it will be passed on to someone else & they will do as they wish.

I have a Gilbert and Barker model 7 type 67 visible gas globe - produced in 1924 I think.

I am looking to get a globe for it - origially was a white eagle, but the globe was broken and I would rather have a round globe anyway.

Would any of these 15 inch globes be correct for 1924?

...they are both more recent than 1924...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Your pump was 1st produced in 1924, BUT was most likely made for a few more years & they staid in service for many years. Mom & Pop stores couldn't afford to run out & buy a newer pump when the old was still working.
IF your wanting a globe for when the pump was 1st produced, you need to be looking for a 1pc. $$$++

All the one piece round glass globes I have seen on the internet are 13 inch.

I assume then that all the 15 inch, two piece with the metal band holding them together are late 20's thru the 40's?

I think a period correct globe for sometime between 1924 and 1927 would be what I am looking for.
In Kansas where the pump is from, we had Crown, white Eagle, Kanotex, Derby, etc.

So would I be looking for the crown shaped globe like this?

Thanks for the advice!

Another website lists this white eagle globe as 1920 - 1925

The crown you have pictured was produced 1932-1962.

The correct crown for 1927 would read red crown, or gasoline on bottom band.

Thanks Loyd!

I moved back to Kansas early 2014 and the pump project was put on hold. I am going to finish it up this spring.

Any good places to get the glass reproduced for 15 inch globes for White Eagle? Nobody reproduces them currently or a Derby DOC 15 inch, but I see on the internet several people will custom make them.

I was wanting to know who does good work?

Thanks!

Hi Ryan, the topic of getting globes reproduced recently came up. Wasn't specific to 15" globes though. Here's the thread:

http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=98412&Number=598174#Post598174

I've never had globes made, so can't help you on where to go. If you need help on how to prepare the graphics to give to the shop, I've done that.

Thanks Paul!

Are you taking images and making them vector images?
My uncle does a lot of sign/graphic work and he uses a program to make an image a vector image so that it can be made to any size without distortion.

Hi Ryan,

Yeah, I always convert to vector to avoid artwork charges at the sign maker, saves a lot of $$$. I used to do a lot of vector conversion myself, took hours and hours, then found online services that will do a great job for cheap with even the worst bitmaps or JPEGs.

One more dumb question.

Did Derby Oil Company make a 15 inch globe?

My dad has a really nice DOC 4 foot porcelain sign.

I have been trying to do research online, but the listings for vintage Derby globes doesn't usually say if it is 13.5 or 15 inch.

Thanks for all the help on this thread, you have all been great.
