Hello

I just found a Smithway pump on the edge of a timber near a friend’s corn field. The pump was buried in the mud laying face down. The mud must have added one hundred pounds to the already heavy pump. I was just wondering if parts were hard to find on these pumps. I don’t see parts in anyone’s catalogue nor is the pump given much mention in any of my books I have here at home. One on items I need for sure is the cast emblem door latch site glass located in the middle of the door. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciated it.

The A.O. Smith Company made a lot of different pumps Greg... I've got one or two around here myself. Is there any chance that we can get a picture? If you need help, e-mail it to me, and I'll post it for you.

Looks like, according to Jack's book, a Smithway L-1DP which was originally built by Neptune. Can anybody help with parts?

Nice find Greg, This one has a little more character than a short Wayne or Tokheim.

I feel the same way this pump definitely has more character. I like the embossed lines going down both sides. I also like the way the doors and latches operate. I’ve done a couple MS 80’s and really am not crazy how the doors kind of just flop around when you open them. The doors on the Smithway swing nice and latch even nicer. I can’t wait to get started on it

Greg, I have one of these that I did up in PURE - it looks great, especially after you get the ad glass in the window. There is a guy who has been advertising in Check The Oil who has some L-1 parts. No phone or E-mail, he requests that you write. The info is:

Greg, i would post if I wasn't such a computer idiot. i cannot get my Easyshare camera to download properly. I am looking to buy another camera soon. I will send you one when I can.

One thing you want to look for on your pump is the four pieces of "trim" that fits into the window rubber. The ad glass slides into this channel, and the trim "fits" against the pump face when the door is closed. It really dresses up the pump when it is finished. I only had one set of this trim, and since my pump backs up to a wall, I just slid the ad glass into the window rubber on the back side. Good luck. Brady

No problem when you get a new photo or camera you can send me the photo. I do have the shim pieces you are refereeing to, but like yours I only have one side. Those look like something I can make myself without to much trouble. With winter starting up here in Iowa I wont get to much garage time. I need to insulate and heat it but that's another project. I may pick you brain a little for some measurements on the ad glass. Is ad glass a standard size on most pumps? Any photo will also help. Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Greg, I bought the ad glass for my Smithway from Pergle , they knew what size I needed. I also buy from Vics, they also know what size I need when I tell them what pump I need them for. Both are excellent people to deal with. Brady

Hey Greg, that pump you found in the corn field, how did you get it out?

Basically the pump was setting in a small timber along side a cornfield. We drove about a half mile along side the field in my truck to pick it up. Like an idiot I forgot my camera to show how much the pump was buried in the mud.
