I took the top off of my pump and managed to remove the little square glass piece for the light. I pulled about half a five gallon bucket of mouse nets out of it and then ran a vacuum down from the top and vacuumed it out. There is some crusty dirt and stuff on the inside. My question is: has anyone ever used a hose with the pump standing up and sprayed it out? I figure the water would come out through the nozzle part on the pump. I was actually able to vacuum the dirt through the nozzle opening to get the fine stuff out. Could I just put hang a 5 gallon bucket off the tube where the gas would come out and spray out the pump with a garden hose?

Thanks
Mac

Yes, that will work but it would be even better if you could plug it for a while to let the water soak everything up. Add some detergent and hilex to the water and let it stand for an hour before rinsing it. I did this on a 176 before and I was able to get the cylinder pretty darn clean.

Plug the hose outlet and fill with acid. Let it sit and then drain it. It will be crystal clear. Takes 5 to 10 minutes. Then rinse with water.

What kind of acid and will it damage the gallon markers? Do I dilute the acid?

Thanks Kevin. What is hilex and where do I get it? What kind of detergent do you recommend?

I use some that's made for aluminum wheels. It's pretty weak. Look at your local auto parts store.

I have had really good luck with CLR, that removes rust and calcium deposits. Available at any Dollar General. It is basically a mild acid like Notchcad is using.

Thanks guys for all the help. I flushed it out with Gain laundry detergent and water. I installed a pvc gate valve and filled the cylinder with water and detergent, let it sit, and then opened up the gate valve into a 5 gallon bucket, and shut gate valve once full, and then drained it again. I then used some bleach and water, repeated what I had done before, and then finished up with CLR. I came up really clean. I was pretty happy with it considering it was full of mice nests and dirt! It smelled like a barn in my garage, but now the thing is clean and no smell! Thanks guys!!

The first pic doesn't really show you how bad it really was, but it gives you a pretty good idea if you look close at the glass. The second pic is while I had it full of water and waiting to drain it. The third is not the best picture as I took it in a not well lit garage. I haven't put the top back on yet as I wanted to let it dry out completely. Notice the pvc gate valve I put on so I could fill and drain during the process.

Thanks again.
