Hello All,
Just wondering if anyone knows what the HC stands for in Sinclair HC gasoline. Also need to find out how much a gallon of gas was in the mid 1930's. Regular as well as Ethyl. Our small community is replicating an old Sinclair station that was in service years ago. Thanks,

Mark

The "H-C" stands for "Houston Concentrate" which was developed at the Houston refinery around 1926. It was advertised as the first premium gasoline. This is what I have been told in the past.

Thanks,
Mike

Sinclair also had a grade of gas that said "HIGH COMPRESSION". That is another possibility.

I also read that HC stood for Houston Concentrate, a fuel additive. I think it was something like the ethyl additive? The High Compression also fit the letters and I saw a picture of a globe with that wording on it.

I recently saw a beautiful unrestored Bennett. It was a Sinclair and had the old HC decal and said High Compression under it.

Mark,
Here it is from the Sinclair book. "The Houston refinery also developed the famous H-C gasoline, Sinclair's first super-fuel marked in 1926. The initials of this gasoline stood for 'Houston Concentrate,' but some advertising men preferred the term 'High Compression.'"
You may want to see if you can find a copy of the book "a great name in oil, Sinclair through fifty years" published in 1966 by Mcgraw-Hill.
Would be a great addition to your restored station.
Good luck,
Ed
