Great show! Nice hotel, a lot of venders and an auction at the end. I think this is the second largest show in the US, right after Iowa Gas.

Guys, help a rookie understand.

A couple questions. Some may seem obvious and stupid. Please bare with me.

I understand there is the auction on Saturday. I've been to the Matthews site and looked through all 20 pages of the CTO 2013 catalog.
Am I correct in that these are the items that will be up for auction on Saturday? This is the one with the big Mobil collection correct?

I read that there is a 10% cash buyers premium. Is this the only added expense when purchasing at the auction?

Are the auction items set at this point or could more be added by the time of the show?

Do the auction items have reserves? If so, is this identified on the Matthews site in any way. I couldn't find anything.

Are you able to open view, touch, examine the items prior to the auction?

Are auction items assumed authentic? Are non-authentic pieces properly identified? Or is this a non-issue with this type of event?

Approx. how many vendors at this show?

Any other helpful hints to a rookie show attendee would be appreciated.

Steve, this is a great show and a great auction. There are no reserves on the items and what you are seeing is most likely what will be at the auction. Dan sometimes adds some additional items. Yes you can walk right up and touch the items and they will tell you if something is a reproduction however there are very few of those, if any, in the auctions.
Good luck and see you there

Still waiting as well and I sent stuff in about a mouth ago. Last year I remember having to call the hotel to confirm just so that I would know that my forms were received.

Are you guys talking about registrations for being a vendor at the show or does this have anything to do with just getting a room to attend the show?

Rooms for the show. It seems this is the only way to know if you are set for the show.

I sent in the registration for the show and asked for a room for the 19,20,21. The promoter then reserves the room and show spaces. Well I finely received a confirmation e-mail from the hotel having me for the 20th and 21. I called the hotel and luckily the issue has been straightened out. I have heard that this has been a problem for a few people, so check and make sure your set.

You can either get an outside space as a vendor or sell out of your room, or both. This hotel provides a great venue for the show.

Thanks guys.

Heading out from Massachusetts and looking forward to seeing everyone again. I'll be set up in my room and out in the parking lot. I've enlcosed a picture of just a very small amount of the signs, posters and displays I'll be bringing. I've got a bunch of clean stuff and its all looking for a new home...Should be pulling in around 2pm on the 20th. Feel free to email me at shaunhiggins@comcast.net with any questions. Thanks!

OK this is unfair, posting pictures of what I'll be missing is cruel. At least if it is out of sight, it is out of mind.
Steve I agree going room to room sounds different. Bringing a big buddy with you?

In my neck of the woods there are a few per year but they mainly have car parts. Not much in the way of advertising. Part of it is volume from a lower population when this stuff was used, part is that there maybe a larger collector crew here as a percentage of the population. I have a few acquaintances that routinely go to the US to find treasures. I imagine Ontario which has a long history of petroleum exploration refining and sales would have a more exuberant swap meet scene. But you would need to get comments from gassers in Ontario to get information. Maybe TC could weigh in or Dave can speak to the BC scene.

Mark, no we don't have any big shows with the quality and quantity that you gentleman are use to...we are seriously deprived.

Canada has always had 10% the population of the USA, so right away we have 90% less of this stuff to go around. To a great extent people around here throw out things as soon as they are no longer needed. This is further compounded by the fact that most of our population is concentrated in large urban cities. Real estate has always been expensive so even in small towns buildings get sold rather then locked up for 40+ years intact and full of inventory. Vacant buildings get torn down and rebuilt. Property taxes are to high to have buildings sitting vacant as well as every jurisdiction has bylaws prohibiting vacant buildings.

The largest swap meet around here is Portland, Oregon and that doesn't even come close to competing with the pictures that I see posted here from the other USA shows.

You guys have no idea; how lucky you are or how good you have it being close to those big shows!

Hi, I'll be there looking for cities service stuff-signs and globes. Here in Canada we have a couple of service station memorabilia clubs. The western one and one in Ontario which I'm a member of,its the largest and covers coast to coast, with a few American members and some in England. The stuff is hit and miss, mostly at antique shows, a good nostalia show this Sunday which usually has some good finds. All the older collectors opt for auctions as the one last weekend that brought big prices.
As far as the Barrie flea market goes, it used to be a good show when in was at Molson Park, but the last few times I've been there just seems like a waste of my time in my opinion. Ted

Don't make plans on my info but I think check in for the show is at like 3 pm on Thursday. If this year is anything like last year, some vendors will be setting up outside Thursday afternoon.

Got this email today!!

Dear 2013 Show Registrant,

Thank you for registering for the “Check the Oil!'s” Annual International Petroliana Collectors’ Show, known as “The Big Friendly”! Response has been great this year! We are returning to the Dublin Embassy Suites located in the Northwest Columbus, Ohio area at 5100 Upper Metro Place near the intersection of SR 161 and I-270 (exit 17).

A Registration and Exhibitor Information tent (outdoors in west parking lot) will be open by 3:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon — please check-in with us to obtain your registration materials.

Last year, we started set-up and trading late on Thursday, no more waiting around to guess the time.... This year, we will open all exhibit areas for set-up and trading at 5 pm Thursday–outdoors, indoor ballroom and indoor 2nd floor. Please help us load the parking lot and indoor rooms quickly and safely AND assist all the exhibitors by not gathering prior to 5 pm... only tables, tents & vehicles will be in the spaces.

2nd floor hotel rooms will not be open for visitors until after 5 pm at the hotel's request that hallways be as clear as possible to facilitate move-in and housekeeping.

The hotel will NOT have hotel rooms ready until 3pm on Thursday. Please help us control congestion, both inside and out by arriving after 3 pm. Please keep in mind there is a 72 hour cancellation policy for the hotel rooms. If you are pulling a trailer, or have a large vehicle, there is not enough room to turn around at the hotel lobby check-in. Please park across the street and walk to check-in.

The first event is the Hotel Manager's reception beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday. Please join us and visit with your fellow collectors. Room-to-Room Show and Tell starts at 7:30 pm.

The buffet dinner on Friday has changed from past years. Tickets will be sold on Thursday and Friday until 10 am at the "CTO!" Booth. The Italian buffet features two sauces and pasta choices/two entrees, salad, drinks, and assorted desserts. You will be able to pay cash or charge this to your room, as it is sponsored by the hotel restaurant.

We have been advised by the hotel that overflow parking lots, including the field across the street, are for PARKING ONLY and that they will enforce the no trading or selling transaction policy. Only Sleeping rooms on the 2nd floor will be open for "visitors, trading & selling" during the day on Friday. We ask for your cooperation with the hotel policies as this is a great facility and we want to return to the Embassy Suites in 2014.

Thank you for your support, we look forward to seeing you soon and celebrating our 27th show!

I won't get to make it this year, but my buddy Pat, (PUREGAS), will have some stuff that he and I own together. Check the for sale section to see a cool globe we will have for sale. Maybe next year I can make it.
