Thank you to all who responded to the cleaning question, I really appreciate the help. On Lubester decal placement, if one has the rectangular stationary Lubester box, a person recently told me that the decals go on the narrow ends of the lubster box, not the long sides...is that correct, AND does anyone know what Humble decal would be appropriate for a Humble Lubester of the 1940's. I'm assuming the color would be red on the lubester, don't know if the actual pump and lid are a different color or red like the box. Any knowledge will help and be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

A lot of time several of these lubsters were placed side by side so any decals on the side wouldn't show. That is why the decal would be on the end. It would depend on the placement of the lubster at the station. I've restored a couple of 30 gal. square ones and did both ways. Go with whatever works in your situation or put the decals on three or four sides and then something will always show.

Mike, take a look at the pumps in this pic....

I dont know how the lubesters were painted, but you can see the pump colors here. You might want to paint the lubester Red, with the top 1/3 White. Paint a White field on the front, then place the decal there. You might want to put a red stripe above the lower portion, so that you can put your product description there, 30WT, or 10W40. Get you hands on "The Guide to Gas Pump Restoration", and look at the Amoco Regular pump, on page 104. As I said, I dont know how they were painted, but I think this would look good.

Also check out the pumps at the bottom of this link. This should give you an idea...

This is from the Richfield Specs manual. Like pumps, most of us come up with fantasy schemes and over-restore them compared to how they were actually put in use, but this is what they usually looked like in front of the stations or in the service bays from the photos that I have seen.

Personally, I prefer a two tone color scheme and a little more detaling on the pump mechanism.
