Hello, new member here with probably a newbe questions. Recently bought a 1951 Tokheim 39 short. On the top of the pump is what i believe is an ad holder. What would of originally gone on there? Is it worth saving or should I remove it and plug the hole? Have been trying to find some info and pics of one and haven't had much luck.

thank you, David

A pricer box (displaying the price per gallon) attached to that bracket.

You wouldn't have any pics of one with an ad on it would you? And do you think it's worth leaving on, or should i just remove it?

Thank you! Now at least I know what to look for if I decide to keep it on there. Do you know if it's uncommon to have one or do most people remove them?

Thanks to tokheim for posting the picture.
Most don't have one because they didn't know what they needed till that picture was posted.

Up to you. I dig 'em. I have 2 39's - 1 tall and one short...both with the same pricer brackets that I'm going to mount price boxes on. I've found out they they were fairly rare....so if you got it...use it...neat stuff to see.

Interesting thinking back then that some used boxes from the earlier days on a pump that displayed the ppg right on the pump veeder. Now you see the progression to the giant billboards you see at every modern station.

I say use it...its cool and a part of the history. Regards.

Rare?
I believe all the 39 A & B came with the hole. The pin is actually screwed into the cast piece below. Many pumps have the hole with a little cap snapped in.

I have a ton of ads for the 39, but none of them show this item. http://petrolianacollectibles.com/tokheim%2039a.htm

The reason for them is that some cities/states required the price be shown where it was easy to see.

Actually this holder could have been used to hold anything, like a sign advertising a oil & lube job (when was the last time anybody came into a station and asked for a lube job?).

EVERY TIME I pull into a station for fuel, I feel I'm getting a Lube Job!
But it's still better than walking.

Nothing is rare about a Tokheim 39. One of the most produced gas pumps. Like a belly button, everyone's got one!

By "rare" i was specifically referring to the pricer arm and assorted parts, ads etc.. to it. I was by no means trying to infer i had a rare pump.

Exactly what I was referring too...as was the original post. Interesting it was state law that required them. Thanks Jack for adding that...good to know.
