My Boyle Dayton is being restored. I have had good advice on what to pump in it,that would resemble gas. Any ideas? It will be filling a container, which then can be pumped back into the cylinder at my filling station. Les's filling station

Apple cider would be the best color, but it would certainly spoil in a short time. You might want to look into "Food Grade" antifreeze. The stuff in my heater is a pale pink color. I dont know if it is made in other colors.

WHAT ABOUT FOOD COLORING AND A SPLASH OF BLEACH TO KEEP IT FROM SPOILING OVER TIME? MY SISTER HAS HAD AN OLE OAKEN BUCKET WITH THE SAME WATER WATER FLOWING THRU IT FOR SOME TIME NOW WITH JUST A SPLASH OF BLEACH IN IT.

You can also substitute hydrogen peroxide for the bleach if you are concerned about the chlorine odor. The peroxide is also much safer around pets if there is any chance that they might drink the liquid.

Ok, this is coming from left field and i hope I understand the concept. What about putting water in it and having the cylinder tinted gasoline color? It wouldn't look like it is draining, but it would be the right color when sitting.

I'd go with some type of antifreeze. You don't want it breaking the cylinder in the winter!
Methanol and water and food coloring...
Or...
Ethanol (everclear?) and the same?

Thanks for all of the ideas. It will be awhile before all of this comes together. I have had the Boyle Dayton around for 25 years. Recently I was able to buy a glass cylinder, handle, and a cast iron china hat from a twin that was being parted out. Normally the base would sit on my cement floor, but in order to have my pipes underneath, I had to build a pad for it to sit on. I raised it six inches. I must say, it is a fun project. I was thinking about what ever I use for a gas look liquid, maybe should be something that wouldn't rust the cast iron pistons, and parts At the same time have a small amount of lubricant.

For keeping the pump from rusting - protect it by adding "pump saver" for airless paint spray units in the paint area by home sprayers at home depot.
The stuff is blue in tent, and you can tent it using RED or another food color agent to get your color needed. It mix's with 1 gallon of water per little bottle - and it is like 1.49 a bottle. It will NOT freeze and just to be sure I would add a bit of anti-freeze to the mix.
This is the formula I came up with for the bank I did a pump for here in Kansas.

Thank Travis, That sounds like the way that I will go. I didn't know about this product( pump saver). This means that Oldfuelish will have to drink the ten gallons of beer.

If you need help with the beer, be sure and contact all your new friends here for help. I'm certain that somebody will be more than happy to volunteer for the work. Gass geeks are like that...... LOL.

Hi Thunder 11,thanks for the advice. When I can figure out how to send a picture of my filling station,I will. The Boyle Dayton will be done in Shell, as the two Tokiem 300's are at the filling station I don't know if it was meant for a globe base, because the china hat comes to a peak, but a globe base will sit on it just fine. I was wondering if an island light would look good. The pump will sit under cover
