Ed, I believe that such tins are/were much more common than you think... In 1956, HI-SPEED had 2000 Gas Stations in Ohio and Michigan. As this map advertises:

I just cleaned up the signs with a little soap and warm water and barely scrubbed. Packed on dirt and grime from the years came off pretty easy!
