Hello y'all. I'm new to this site. I have a large collection of things you all would like. And, NO, you can't have my L-88 !!! I have a question that I was hoping someone could answer. I have a very large collection of matchbooks that are all from the 20's to the 50's. Lots of oil and gas related ones. Among them, I found one that I find most interesting and I can't find any information about it. It is a matchbook that advertises Speedway "70" gasoline. Inside the cover is a list of locations of 5 or 6 different locations in Detroit where the stations were located. There is a checkered flag on the cover and it says...If you had a million dollars, you couldn't buy a better gasoline than Speedway "70". I've researched and found Speedway "77", and Speedway "79", but no "70". I was hoping one of you all would recognize this and point me in some sort of direction as to where I might be able to locate more items from the company. Thank you for your time.

According to a business card I have Sucher Bros founded Speedway Petroleum in 1919. I have matchcovers of when they sold coal as well as gasoline, were distributors for Penn-Born motor oil, sold Speedway 77 & Speedway 79 gasoline. Sometime after Aurora Gasoline Co. was founded in the early 1930's, Aurora became a part owner & in 1947 bought the balance. So your Speedway 70 matchcover would be from a post coal & pre- 77 era.

Hey Dave, Thanks for the reply. The front of the matchbook does in fact say Sucher Bros. I assumed that it was in the same genre as "77" and "79", but I wasn't sure. It is a "feature" matchbook, meaning the matches actually looked like something other than matches. Unfortunately, the matches are gone. The cover, however, is in excellent shape. I went through several thousand matchbooks and this one, in particular, jumped out at me. I pulled all the ones out that related to automobiles, gas, oil, etc., and they look awesome on display. I do appreciate the information. Robert

Hey !! I have a son I call Big Al ! When he was a little tike, I got him a blue chambray shirt, we sewed an "Al" patch on the front of it, a Standard Oil patch on the back, and put candy cigarettes in the pocket. He was a huge hit !! I will take some pics of my collection and I will try and figure out how to post them. I'm kinda old and technically challenged. I do know that I have at least one Veedol matchbook in there.

My L-88 is original. Even the paint. I'm the second owner. I bought it 1n 72 when I was 19. I know it's worth $$$. It's an unrestored survivor with less than 80,000 miles. I have sons and grandsons who can fight over it when I'm gone. When I got divorced, I had it written into the divorce decree that the L-88 was MINE !! A local dealer here in town, Bob McDorman, tried to buy it from me many times. After I got divorced, I told the ex-wife what it was worth. One of the greatest moments of my life. HA !!!

Great stuff - Always cool to hear of a long-time owner - the divorce story is classic.
I bought my 70 Mach 1 in 1985. Just a badly used car at the time - It has stayed with me through all the years and I will never sell it. I also have a 68 Corvette - a big block, but nowhere near original when I bought it (and less original now).

As Octane levels were rising, all oil companies would advertise the NEW Octane as SPEEDWAY 70, when they improved the octane even more they advertised it as NEW SPEEDWAY 77/79. I have a UNION OIL of Calif. bulletin from 1932 advertising the NEW 76 Octane [but they misprinted it as NEW 67 Octane!].
