This ebay item 360786531960 was sold to me as an original. When I received it and found out that the dark blue mountains make this a phony sign, I returned it and did get all my money back. However, that said, here it is again being sold as an original sign even though they know it's not. Just saying

I always heard they were Delivery Truck Door signs, not Station or Pump signs.

I only thing that I will say about this sign is that no one has ever been able to prove to me that it is not right. I use to put age unknown on the dark mountain version.
When I first started selling petroliana I was told that the baby blue mountains was real and the dark blue mountains that was thin was to. That the dark blue mountain was not. Who made this rule?
What if they are all not right?
Does anybody out there have photos of stations, trucks, lubsters or gas pumps?

thats what should be focused on... I've seen these discussed several times now and someone always speaks up with this rule... but no one has any idea where it came from. hopefully someone can find an old photo seeing this sign used, but then again it has a good chance of being a b&w photo which won't do a thing for solving the discrepancy.

The early Golden West signs, with the dark blue mountains are thin. They have some flex. I have a friend that found some of them in the old bulk plant in San Antonio, Tx. It is my opinion that many were made for pumps about the time the company sold out, which would account for so many NOS ones. 20 years, or so, ago some really stiff ones were made. I'm sure another run has been made recently, as they appear to look a little different. Especially with the black speckled back. I've had the stiff ones in my hands and they are definitely re-pops. The thin ones are a judgement call. I think they're okay. JMO.

I have seen three versions of these that I can remember...light blue mtns and two with dark blue mtns. One with dark blue mountains has gray back and the other is a black backed version with larger grommets. I have seen other signs with the gray backs and I believe they were made by a porcelain sign manufacturer in texas (I have seen a few auto dealer ssp signs (small ones 9-12 inch with same backs.) I "believe" the gray backed versions are 80s...Until someone finds a pic (good luck to us all)...I guess we are just guessing.

grabber, the sign company in Fort Worth you are referring to was Weber's. They went out of business 2 years ago.

I stay away from that sign, Just to much Confusion about Real vs Repop That about says it all! People would rather stay away from a suspect sign, than do research and hope for the best! Its a prime example of how unmarked reproductions will actually kill a market for a collectible sign! It will continue to get harder to market one of these signs and the repop versions will be virtually worthless. Its like condemming a great sign to obscurity, all in the name of greed!

Well I was offered 2K for my light blue mtn. version a couple days ago. Turned it down (want $2250) While I know the repops have hurt this sign it's still a beautiful pump plate. Looks great on the wall but if the money talks the sign walks. Time will tell.

The Dark Blue that I have has a Finished Creamy Yellow back. Was told it might be a Repop when I bought it.

bought this 30 yrs ago from Kim Kokles at the Glendale advertising show & was told then If I ever find out its a repop they would give me my money back. I paid 300. this is the flex model- I've also had the ridged model but decided it needed to go down the road...

I have only had one of these...looked like Randy's...I have not seen one like DB is talking about. Either way the signs look great...signgod I believe I have seen a stamp with the Weber's name on the back (one of the smaller auto dealer ssp signs)...I just remember seeing a sticker from a TX company on the back. The grommets were the same (not the smash type) and the backs were the same as the golden west I had. I do always find it odd when almost all of the examples out there are dead mint though or close to it... (Butch metioned the bulk plant find which would explain this)...I have seen a few of the baby blue version w/ edge chips...I do not recall seeing a hammered/roached one.
