I bought this sign on ebay mainly because I am a sucker for cobalt blue and white signs but also because I happen to have a pump this would attach to across the top with a bracket. My question is this truly a Pure oil sign and what time frame was it used? And what does it mean "no stamps"?

eBay number. 310824776963

Saving stamps is what Im thinking that sign is referring to and I would think it is generic in nature meaning it would have been used at any store that participated in the savings stamp program.

This is a Spur sign. During the reimaging the had in 1961-1962, their standard identification sign was mounted on a v-shaped pole. Below the Spur oval sign, a trapezoidal panel was mounted that allowed space for pricing digits to be mounted. The bottom of the panel read "regular". Assembled the panel would read something like 29C Regular. The reversible Premium/No Stamps panel was supplied for dealers who wished to either price premium, occasionally called for in price wars, or to price regular without giving their proprietary Spur stamps. The same panel, with the Premium/No Stamps panel bolted over the word regular, would then read something like 32C Premium or 28c No Stamps. The panel was used through the 1960s, and has NOTHING AT ALL to do with Pure.

Wow!! Thanks for the information. I figured I could get the real scoop on this sign on this site. Does anyone have a picture of a spur station with this sign displayed?

The attached photo shows a Spur station in Smyrna, TN in 1966. It shows the sign and pole structure with the price panel attached. The Premium/No Stamps panel was designed to fit over the Regular on the sign. The reverse of the base panel reads "Clean Rest Rooms" in the event that no price display was wanted by the dealer. I found the complete set, together, with the base panel, premium/no stamps panel, and number set, in a Spur station in Luck, WI about 25 years ago.

Another photo, from when the base sign was introduced in July 1962. It predates Spur stamps by about a year, so the Premium/No Stamps panel dates from a little later, about 1964..
