I know some of you seniors must be able to teach us more about this. How, if at all, common it was. It looks like a series of angled wedges with signage on them fanning around the globe body. In this case of course saying "Sunoco". The second piece there looking to have an "S". The third having a "U". And so on. Not sure what is on that first piece. Anyone have any other pictures of such a thing? Was this style unique to Sunoco? I know I've seen similar things in a radial porcelain sign like the Quaker State I've shown for example. But I've never seen anything like this until now. Also nice picture of teh price box. Any pics/info greatly appreciated.

Oh man!! That's a decal! I was hoping it was a sign that I needed to try and find some day and add to my collection.
That light up sign of yours is so darn cool!!! I have to get some version of this some day. More than likely will be a bottle rack sign. I dought there are many of the type you have around.
That globe halo sign, or whatever it's called, that I posted about is crazy cool!! Can't imagine finding such a thing. Would love to see pics of one if anyone has one.

Steve, When I first saw this at work I thought I had the answer. But I am not so sure now that I am home looking at what I thought was the answer. Ill let you be the judge. In late 1937 Sunoco had a promotion called High Geared. The promotion had a globe surround like a gear. Here are the two pictures I have. Is it it? Its hard to tell. Probably not since the pumps are newer in your picture but it might give an indication of a promotion involving a globe attachment. John

Very cool John but different. The one I posted is made up of individual pieces. Possibly attached to a common bracket and then attached to the globe. But I love the pics you posted as well and thanks for posting. What is that publication that they are in?

There's a shot of one of these globe attachments in the latest Petroleum Collectables magazine on page 8.
The upper 'triangles' read NU-BLUE and the first two in the photo above seem to be 1/3 and MILLION. Some research into period Sunoco advertising will probably confirm what the lower 4 triangles actually say.
It appears to be a series of 'triangles' (for lack of a better descriptor) mounted to a band that in turn is attached to a low profile steel body.
It wouldn't be that hard to make some of these up. It would just take a bit of planning to make the triangles evenly spaced.
Later . . .
Jim

Jim, The shot in the magazine, is it of one from a collection or is the picture an old period picture?

It's an original shot of a big gas station pump island. It's part of an article on gas station islands. This particular photo shows this globe attachment on the very first pump in line.
Later . . .
