What do you guys make of this. And I have the auto bids turned on in this photo. The item did have a reserve on it. About a week later I noticed the same seller had relisted another one. So I contacted him to try and understand if maybe he had several of them. He told me that the winning bidder of the can wouldn't pay after winning with this strange bidding pattern. So he relisted it.
I just dont get how or why, the winning bidder kept out bidding himself. And then the giant jump at the end when there wasn't even anyone else bidding.
Any thoughts?

Why do some of you spend so much time trying to figure out bidding patterns?? If it's something you want put in your max bid and walk away from the computer!! Looks like he was probably trying to find the reserve..........

Because I spoke to the seller on the phone and I may be trying to work out some other deals with him and I want to be sure there isn't anything fishy going on. The piece in question also was a no return deal. Which usually bothers me.
And if he was only trying to find the reserve, why the big jump in the end. Doesn't make sense.

if you put in a max bid that meets or exceeds reserve it will take you to that reserve price to buy the item no matter what price it's at previously and as far as no returns if it's not what seller states in auction you have ebay & pay pal recourse for money back as it states after no returns section

Sure it makes sense, he was doing small bids hoping to hit it. Then relized he better anti up because he wanted it.......

OR he was jacking the bid! The large bid at the end looks really odd...I bet his reserve was 550! So he had his buddy bid it up to there so the next bid wins it and outbids him!
I have seen this LOTS of times! Again, not sure if this is the case BUT sure looks sketchy!

That's more in line with what I was thinking. Just seems awfully strange to make such a large jump.

I look at this as someone who has no other outlets than to sit in front of a computer and connect with the outside world? Ebay is like a drug some folks can't seem to kick. Way too much "valuable" time is lost in the overall theme of what is achieved......strictly my opinion, as always. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Conspiracy Theory ....Originally a neutral term, since the mid-1960s it has acquired a somewhat derogatory meaning, implying a paranoid tendency to see the influence of some malign covert agency in events.

Fred, I work at a computer all day most often beginning between 5 and 6 am. About once an hour I do a full save of my work which takes a minute. So I jump and check ebay and/or oldgas for a second to fill the time. I see it as a blessing to have something enjoyable for a second. As opposed to sitting there watching an hourglass on the screen.
Also, Thomas Edison said, and I paraphrase,'sleep is a waste of time'. I get up somewhat early.

Looks like bids are searching for reserve. Then maybe bidder hit the lottery and went all in.

Don't try to figure it out. Watched a item all week as high bidder. 10 seconds to go it went from 113.00 to 181.00 and change. Heart broken but life goes on!

Steve. I have seen bidders do this before. Im pretty sure they get mad because they really want an item and after multiple attempts to try and figure out the reserve with what they see as very reasonable bids. They decide to put in a number that they are confident will top the reserve. With the intentions of backing out on buying the item in the event they end up winning the auction. Im not if it's just because curiosity gets the best of them and they just have to know what it would take to meet the reserve. Or if they are so angry they want to payback the seller with a little "up yours" of their own by winning the auction and backing out on the item.

Do you really think it was the $5 increments that I was questioning? C'mon man, try and keep up.

i think it was a good question and it could be done for a variety of reasons, however I have seen others do this with multiple schills....imo, these sellers think that the higher number of bids on an item, are making other potential buyers, bid.....

Just think that while you are looking at bidders bids. Bustermonty and Tom are swooping in on the newly listed items.
I agree with others, what does it matter if someone bids up an item. It is no different than a live auction, bid your max. If you win you win.

I'm so happy for Tom and Bustermonty...LOL ....i agree with spending your limit, but "what does it matter"??? well, if the seller is bidding up his own signs, its not allowed on ebay and probably called fraud or something like that in criminal court and this should be pointed out to the most ignorant ...........

FYI, it happens in all forms of Auctions.... Online Auctions and Live Auctions. I would bet that some people that consign stuff with Mathews/Morphys sit behind their keyboard and bump up bids on their own items to cover their investments. It's just the way it is and will go on forever. So just Bid what ya want to pay and if you don't win move on.

I must be reading something different, the MAIN point is you should not be able to raise your own bid on ebay, if I'm the high bidder at say $10, I can bid another 15 times say up to $500 and my bid should remain at $10 because there's no one there to make it rise. The exception is if there's a reserve, if it was at $250 my bid would go there and stay, even if I kept bidding. Look at the page that was posted from ebay, it should not be possible but I saw this once before. I have no explanation for it but I see what you mean.

I appreciate most everyone's thoughts on the matter but just let it go. I thought the one last mega high bid seemed awfully strange and just wondered what some of you might have had to say about it. I now believe it had nothing to do with the seller and was just some guy who jumped in high just to find out the reserve and he never had any intention of paying. It's actually kind of pathetic on his part.
Dont let it stir the pot around here. It's no biggy.
