So yesterday me and my buddy were out cruising around when he spotted this on the side of an old tire shop. I went in and spoke to the owner who told me if I can get it down he would sell it to me. Went back today with a few ladders and some wrenches and took it down. It was pretty scary to be up about 16 feet on a wobbly ladder in a chilly and windy day not knowing what would happen as I freed the bolts. Turns out it came down pretty easily.

Once down I was a bit disappointed to see that it was a single sided painted sign. I'm hoping after I attempt to strip the paint that I am not left with a piece of scrap metal.

No matter the outcome it was a fun adventure, thanks Terry for the help today.

Good Eye and story and even if it does strip off everything, you can paint your own Goodyear graphics on it, hang it, and have a smile on your face, from the story, every time you look at it!

Very cool story!! Cool for you for having the gumption to even ask.
I can't wait to see the after pics. I hope I'm wrong but I'm not feeling to good about the potential outcome.

BTW, he didn't want you to paint the blank spot on his building?

Next time let's use my ladder! I've never been on one that shakes so much as yours.

Caption contest for the pic I took!

Update, there is some good news and some bad. the good news is in the first picture (not the best picture due to sun and shadows) you can see the top layer of grey is coming right off. The bad news is the next layer of white is stubborn and if I am too aggressive I know I will ruin the sign.

Now for the mystery. I no longer think this is a goodyear sign. I revealed a little of the colors around a grommet and it is blue and red, any thoughts?

I think it's a sign for the "Wobbly ladder" company! LOL

Thanks

We now spotted the word Goodyear on it through the white paint. Was there ever a blue and red Goodyear logo?

don't worry Cormy, you didn't miss out on anything. After a few hours of scraping I am starting to believe the doubters that said this sign may be shot. The grey paint is coming off no problem but there is a layer of white (may be primer) that by the time I get it removed may wipe out the original paint on the sign

I plan on it Mark, I am going to try a few chemicals along the edges first and see how that goes. I had some luck on the edges with goof off and nail polish remover but the field seems like it binded to that white paint more strongly than the edge.

This sign is 7' wide....kinda reminds me of when I landscaped as a kid, someone once asked a co-worker about a new lawn we had to go cut, he asked is it a big lawn and the reply was no but I still wouldn't want to count the blades of grass.

This might be a long term project

...I wouldn't go too close to the actual edge - that just makes it easier for the stripper to got straight to bare metal...

you need to work fast, but where you think you are already "losing" the sign. Take out the Easy Off oven cleaner, spray it on, give it a minute and gently wipe and spray it over with water, then continue with another spot being careful to keep the easy off away from the original paint the best you can. The trick is keeping the sign clean the whole time and not letting the easy off sit to long.

...and keep a water hose close at hand...sounds funny, but wash it off before you think you should....rinse, repeat, like the shampoo bottle says...and take your time...
