...that Motor is a repro...if you look closely at the differences in the lettering, you'll see it...someone made a pile of these just a few years back, curved and flat...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

...again, check the lettering to be SURE...once you are certain, it might be advisable to scratch 'repro' on the back, so someone on down the line doesn't get burned...

Regarding Gulfiend's post i looked at these signs more carefully and noticed this-
1-The lettering is just a bit larger on the Motor sign
2-The Regular is exactly 8" across.

3-The Motor is exactly 8 3/16" across.

4-Both have split rivets and the Motor sign is much heavier porcelain. Most repops that i have seen have a white back.Is it possible these could be by different mfgs?So far i am not convinced that it is a repop, would like to see a picture of one if available. And no i did not put the paint on the back of the Motor sign!

...this isn't so much about the size of the lettering; compare the same letters on each sign...look closely at the R's...the C's...the lettering on the originals is hand-drawn; the lettering on the Motor sign is computer type - the guy who made the artwork for the repros thought 'this looks close enough'...

...I've got original curved Regular and Premium signs, as well as NOS Regular and Premium water-transfers...both came from impeccable sources, and I have no doubt at all that they are anything less than authentic...the lettering on the decals and the signs are the same...that indicates to me that some agency in NC likely designed the emblems, and sent the artwork out to suppliers, to have the signs/decals made...

...Motor signs like yours show up on eBay rather often...the only others that show up with any frequency, are well-used curved Regular signs...

...I'd say that's a repro, from the same batch...again, look at the differences in the letters, as I described above - tell me what YOU think...look at the R in Regular, and the R in Motor...I enlarged the second image of the signs, and made sure the letters were the same height...note the light blue guides in both photos - I put them there, to show the different measurements, on what should be the same letter...they don't line up...

...first, the back of the R:

...second, the height of the middle stroke (and size of the opening at the top) of the R:

...the diagonal stroke on the R is straight on the red/white original, and slightly curved on the yellow/black repro...
