Someone got a deal but Pumps always seem to go either high or low at auctions as there never seems to be an in between. Weird prices on a number of items....some great buys!

Both were good buys. That's the beauty of auctions, there are always a few sleepers, good deals. I lack the self control to only bid on the good deals...I always get drawn into the bidding wars.

Is anyone else watching the end of this auction and seeing what is going on with the bidding!... it seems VERY fishy!
each item is being bid up until the online bidder is outbid, and then the 'on-site' bid is being cancelled to make the online bidder the top bidder and the winner. thus getting the max amount the online bidder had pre-bid.
I could see that happening on 1 or 2 items where they have to cancel a bid... but it has now happened on the last 10 or so items!

here is a direct copy and paste from the message center:
(note that all the bid changes stopped once I asked why it was happening)
I'm not one for usually assuming bidding conspiracies... but something had to be going on with these.

I wondered what was going on with the bidding also. Happened numerous times where (as an example) I'd see an item bid from 175 to 200....then sell for 175.

Some time ago there was a discussion about how Morphy's instituted some policy that allowed them, as the auctioneer, to bid on items. Or something like that. Of course people were all upset about the idea. Could this be that??

This is perfect example why you shouldn't pre-bid on items especially if you are going to follow the live auction. Some guy pre-bid on almost every globe and he was also bidding during the live auction via proxibid. I just wonder if this person got screwed over in the bidding process. As much as he bought it probably didnt make a difference to him. If you do pre-bid and provide a max, you should expect the auction to start at your max bid - right or wrong. I think it is wrong but it is the world we live in now!!!

Greg... you are exactly right. Whoever the B****e user ID person was that was bidding on all the globes, they just got cheated out of several hundred, if not thousands, of dollars. I can't think of one reasonable excuse the auction company would have for the bidding behavior that went on at the end of that auction.
In this case it was obvious that the bidding was being ran up maliciously.

I have no knowledge of what happened or didn't happen here.
Just as a personal lesson learned. I will relate my opinion on absentee bids. When, I was new and naive; I use to leave absentee bids and then I started to notice a pattern. It seemed like even at a slow auction with a poor turn out, that failed to realize strong prices on other items. The items with absentee bids always seem to fetch a strong price. For this reason; I now, never leave absentee bids anywhere (even local auction houses) simply because in my opinion most auction houses will run up your absentee bids to within one of two bids of you absentee bid.
A lot of times even when I'm in attendance, I feel like some auctioneers run up their bidders using the guise of internet bidders. I don't trust very many auctioneers.

I watched the auction also and started to notice the bidding patterns. When an auction house can see the maximum pre-bid amount on an item and can bid on the items themselves it really makes things seem shady. I would like to know why so many bids got removed and the reason behind it myself.

I am sick and tried of people on here complaining about how I run a auction. I you people do not trust me don't bid it is as simple as that. I have said it before and and will say it again.
And if you do not bid then you have nothing to complain about.
Also do not ask me to deliver your items to you or ask me the value of an item you are wanting to purchase.
Dan Matthews my phone is 217-259-7059 complain to me in person, I am part of Morphy Auction.
I am tried of this *****

I'm not complaining - but based on the observations in this thread, I'll never place another online bid at one of these auctions.

Let me see if i understand this correctly... if you see someone taking money from your pocket then why not change pockets or watch whats going on?
If you think shill bidding is going on then just put a number in your head of what you want to pay and stop there! Do a phone bid versus leaving an absentee bid. Phone bid you don't have to worry about the internet locking up which is why i phone bidded. If you don't like buyers premium then subtract the BP from your top dollar you willing to pay for that item.
Take what you see and hear and make your own judgement of how to handle how your going to bid or just walk away or call Dan if your dealing with him and one of his items and talk to him.
Everyone has stories of crazy stuff that goes on at auctions but airing out on here when your not for sure isn't right.
Just my thoughts...

I appreciate Bryce posting what actually happened with the bids. In my opinion, pointing this out (without accusing anyone) is helpful to other collectors and allows us to make our own educated buying decisions.

Ray, Just a thought but Morphy has 4-5 platforms of bidding beside proxibid. It is possible that they are correcting from other platforms? I am not saying they are not shilling... they could be or grabbing a bid when they don't have one? Lots of stuff going when you have many phone bidders and multiple platforms of biding going on at same time!
Morphy is a very large and reputable auction company... i wouldn't put it past them to come after someone trying to ruin there reputation... could be wrong but take the information and use it for your own judgement and do whats best for you/us.

My posts were not referring to Dan in my posts... I have always respected Dan & I think he is an asset to the hobby - he has helped me out several times... and I will talk to Dan in person in Peotone. I was a bidder/buyer in that auction on multiple items. I never saw activity like this with Matthews Auctions, so I assumed the activity was outside of Dan's scope of responsibility with the auction. If I thought Dan could answer my questions, I would have simply asked him when I spoke with him yesterday.
It's worth noting - I have not seen this activity with previous Morphy auctions. But it doesn't change the fact that as a customer I'd like to know what happened here so that I can be comfortable leaving bids in the future... but I will ask Dan in person. The mods are more than welcome to remove any posts they feel are inappropriate or unwarranted.

I do wish I had gone to the auction on Saturday - there were some great buys and I don't live far away - my loss. But I am also glad that I didn't put in any high absentee bids.

I don't have any answers about the concerns that were brought up in this topic, but I can say Dan is a stand up guy. Many years ago when he was with another auction firm I had concerns about the way some bids were handled. I asked Dan face to face. He explained to my satisfaction how and why they did things. Dan has been a big supporter of this site. Let's not drive him off.

It's sad that Dan had to jump in here as Phil says "he will always take a call, listen to your side and do what he can to fix the problem."
IMO if you want something real bad and can't be there, do a phone bid. I had problems last spring during the auction trying to bid online and Dan Morphy e-mailed me back and came to the conclusion that the computer bid didn't take because someone else bid at the same time I did from a different site. They showed me the computer bids where it never took my bid. It probably was caused by bid's coming from multiple websites.
I have been going to auctions all my life and do I wonder if someone is running up my bids?? Maybe but as John said, Set your price and move on. If your a collector it shouldn't bother you if you set your price.
But on the other hand if your trying to turn around and sell it for big $$$$, it just might but remember most the other guys watching know just as much as you.
Thanks Mike

would love to hear from someone that was there... to find out if there was a reason for the low price? BryceG, Did you already receive your items from the sale 4 days ago? Only asking because I saw a Pacer 400 with Ethyl Logo and Moore's Supreme with Ethyl Logo signs on your web site www.OnceAlwaysPetro.com for sale that look identical to the ones that sold in the auction.

This auction was the first time I made an online purchase from Morphy Auctions. It was just a single item, but I will say I am very pleased with the description and service.
The item was received early this afternoon, just a few days after the sale (and a holiday on Monday). In addition the packaging was top notch.

Sometimes a sounding board like this seems like a way for someone to bit#h and then being able to run away from their comments...especially when everyone knows dan and his team are strong members on here. At any rate...my thoughts on auctions are similar to buying a new car...I can never figure out what the hell is going on with numbers but if I walk out with what I want for what I wanted to pay...then what do I care. As for the example shown...I often attend auctions with my brother and we have accidentally bid against each other from opposite sides of the room. Obviously a decent guy would remove those bids...even if they didn't how could we really complain. Now obviously the case here is removed bids...who knows what happened but OBVIOUSLY there is no concrete evidence to show wrong doing. Now morphys does not owe anyone an explaination..but i bet a pm early on here would have been the most productive means to an answer. My 2 cents...probably worth half that as for that wadhams...Gawt damn I love that for the money.
