I don't know if this was invented for the military during WWII, but they did use this nozzle. It was for the filling of containers in the dark, when the gasoline got near the top the nozzle would whistle.

Jack, the nozzle you posted is very interesting.

I want show you a nozzle of an italian pump I own, the name of the pump is Bergomi and it was used for fill little motorcycles two stroke that used a mix of oil and gasoline
