Hi, folks. Have always wondered how you pronounce the word Sunoco. I've heard it uttered two different ways. When you say the word, do you place the emphasis on SUN (as in "SUN-oco") or on the middle "o" (as in "sun-O-co")?

I've never understood why people say the latter version. After all, when we say Amoco, we say "AM-oco", not "am-O-co".

?????

My dad always said su-NO-co, so thats how i say it. My sister is in Detroit, and she called me up and said "Yeah, we have sno-co's here"... And it was like finger nails on a chalk board to me.

They pronounce it sun-O-co in the media advertising too. Thats how I always pronounced it.

More fun... let's find ways to mispronounce EXXON, ARCO, 76 and a few others.

Then again, I pronounce BP as "beep", like in "I'm going to the "beep" and get some beer."

Hey Ron, Your Exxon question had me searching the web for the answer. I'm not sure if this is correct but found a site http://uschamber.com with some info. Here it is:
Designing for Graphic Identity

Walk through any store and look at packages on the shelves. Decide which ones catch your eye in any given section, and why. Chances are the majority of packages that stand out have what's called "graphic identity."

Graphic identity is defined as a unique two- or three-dimensional graphic symbol that may be recognized by target buyers as being associated with a particular brand or business.

Sometimes this graphic identity takes the simple form of a unique brand logo or name with unusual letter shapes. For example, Exxon is an artificial computer-derived name without prior meaning. However, the unusual double XX in the name provides a unique graphic identity that makes this name recognizable even at distances where normal words are unreadable.
