There was talk a while back about doing pump of the month. No one started it So I will try. I can not guarantee I will do it every month. This month we will do bennett 300 and 500 series. We will also include Bennett 76 and 77. I will start with info for 300 and 500 but post your 76 and 77s any time.

The 300 series included 371,372,373,383(not including Gulf)and were made from 1938-1941. The 371 has a computing Veeder Root, 373 is a twin, 373 is a non-computing clock unit and the 383 is a non-computing Veeder Root.

The 500 series included 541,542,543,545( not including Gulf)and were made from 1939-1941. There was also the 546,566,567 with the sight glass at the top in place of the ad glass. the 541 has a computing Veeder Root, 542 is a twin,543 has a non-computing Veeder Root,545 is a non-computing clock unit, 545 is a computing unit, 566 is computing with a hose retractor and 567 is non-computing with hose retractor and was made from 1940-1941.

The two series look the same but not many parts are interchangable. The frame are the biggest difference. I will post several pictures of the differences. We will start with pictures of the frames and on-off levers. The on-off lever is the only way to tell the two series apart with out opening the door. Also note in the frame pictures the door latching systems. If I do not note it the firt picture will be the 300 series and second 500 series.

The 300 has for hinges on each side the 500 has three.

Some 300s used the 500 style reset handle, first pic is the 300 and looks kind of like a G&B handle.

There were East coast and West coast light units. The west coast have explosion proof with the glass jars and East just had light reflectors. I only have pics of West coast.

The Eary 300 nozzle receivers were cast iron with bolt on the inside. Later ones and 500 series screws on the outside.

The ID tags are different and another way to tell the two series apart with out opening the door. That is if you can read it on a unrestored pump.

The hose outlets were the same but there were 3/4 and 1 inch sizes. Als found a 90 degree one most were a 45 degree. There was also a safty shut off style.

The 300 series faces were flat and used a steel mounting pan. They were aluminum. I do have one flat porcelain set and seen one other set. The 500 used a one piece face with rolled sides. They came in aluminum and porcelain. The 546,566 and567 used both styles of faces.

Here are picture of the twin parts. The twin is basically two single pumps joined together. The bases have a flat spot to join the and the reset is on the hose side. These pictures are from a 542.

The Bennett 76 and 77 came in an early and later version with both versions having a two or four ad glass top. These were also sold with SSE 76, 77 ID tags (Service Station Equipment). They were made from 1935 to 1939. The early model has a external visi guage and a one piece casted face bezel with the trim part chrome plated. Some of the real early models had a cast iron top, the rest a pot metal top. The later model has a sight glass in the face with cut outs in the trim area and separate stainless trim that fit in place. The 76 is a computing pump with a Veeder Root and the 77 is a non-computing pump with a clock unit. The early model had a different reset handle the the later. These pumps also had east ans west coast light units like the 300 and 500 series. There was also a special face bezel made for Sohio. I do not have a lot of pictures of these pumps but do have an early and late model.

Thanks for the complements. Glad you are enjoying it, it is a lot of work. Future ones may not have as much information. Bennetts are one of my favorite pumps and I own several. I am thinking about one in the future for 600, 700, 900 and 1000 series Bennetts.

bennett 391, does anyone have one? I can not find any information on one. This one was on ebay a while back. It looks like a 546 but has a 300 series on-off lever and the ID says 391 but is a newer style ID tag. They did not show the inside and wonder if it has a pipe frame.

Here is an original oil painting I bought. There were no prints made of it so it is a one and only. While image surfing I found the image that was used to do the painting.

Thanks for posting your 76 frame. I did not mention that the 76 and 77 had a pipe frame. Most pumps before the late 30s had pipe frames. There are some pumps that the frame is part of the visable outer portion like Wayne 60s, M&S 70s and G&B 70, 80, 86.

Here is a close up of the non-computer face. Notice there is no total dollar amount, just how much per gallon. That is why it is a non-computer, it does not calculate the total price. it just shows the gallons dispensed. It also only has one totalizer (little slot with tiny numbers)instead of two.

The 373-F of just a 373 is a clock face pump. The 383 has a non-computing Veeter Root like what is in your pump. It must of had the clock swithched out at one time or the access door with the ID tag could have been changed. I seen a Bennett 371 that had an ID tag that said 542. Either way your pump is awesome. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I've only managed to have 546's pass through here. Three of them at that. They do make for a nice pump to work on.

This is great seeing all these Bennetts and thanks for the complements. A lot more 76s being posted than I thought there would be.

The Union 76 is nice, I think I seen it being built. I was at Dave`s house four years ago picking up a parts 371 Bennett. There was one being assembled.

Randy, I am glad your pump is 100% original. I bet you are happy to know some one has not messed with it.

Here's my 76. It was posted back in December when I finished it but thought I'd add it to this thread. Love all the posts so far and hope the POTM keeps going again. There are so many variations of all of the pumps that it's really a great learning experience to bring everyone's input to one thread. I'm on the hunt for more Bennett pumps to add to my collection. Keep em comin guys...

We have not seen a 373 yet so here is a new face, original hands and a clock mechanism. The white face pan is for a 300 series Veeder Root and the rusty one is for a 373 clock. The cross bars are the only difference. The 77 uses the same clock mechanism.

First off, I realize this is a two year old thread. However, I am bringing it back for informational purposes. I recently bought what I thought was a common Bennett pump. When I got it home I realized it was a Bennett 391, which there is not a lot of information on - at all. I saw that Matt Alvarez put a lot of work into this thread and I wanted to complete it a little more for those who may need the info for future use (just as I used this thread last week - along with almost 10,000 other views). It's still a fairly common style pump, but if someone has to ID one without a tag, maybe this will help. So here is the Bennett 391... and she's a rough one.

Date of Manufacture: According to my Blue Book the 391 was only made in 1939 (and has a K on the tag).

Frame: Pipe

Computer: Computing Veeder Root

Ad glass: None

Door Hinges: 4 - same as other 300 series pumps

Door latches: 4 latches along side rail, with internal lift lever

Hose outlet: 45 degrees

Face Plates: Missing - I assume they had to be flat and porcelain, since the sight glass was up above. All the above pictured Bennett's without ad glass and the sight glass up top have porcelain faceplates.

I.D. Tag/badge: This 391 uses a 500 series style I.D. tag.

One last thing I wonder about the 391, is if maybe the model number 391 was designated for The Standard Oil Company (and/or its affiliates). My pump has original paint and the globe ring on top is an original contoured 7" ring made for a Crown globe (or affiliates). This is just merely a guess/possible theory.

After this thread I was able to add five more pumps to my collection and a parts pump I am trying to piece together. The first was a few months after this thread. It is the Bennett 77 that I posted earlier in the thread. I was able to make a deal on it, added some ad glass, a globe and turned it around. The back side against the fence has a good decal. Two of the additions are 541s and the other two are 373s. The parts pump is a 371. It is the one with the plastic Shell pump plate. It is missing a door and some small parts.
