Looking for any info on Bluebonnet Gas mentioned on this Needle card from the 1920's. No luck finding anything with a Net search.
This is from Transcontinental Oil, before the Ohio Oil bought them.
Thanks Chuck

There is a picture of a Bluebonnet globe in the pink globe book. It is killer looking globe, so obviously they had some stations of some kind. I believe the picture in the book is the only one of those globes to be found yet. If you look in the back of the globe book, I believe it will tell you what little is known about the company.

The way I would interpret the needle card is that Bluebonnet was just another grade of gasoline sold by Marathon Co. not another company.....mm

I believe the 3/9 on the package refers to the eedles in the kit. My opinion is that Bkuebonnet was a grade of gasoline. It looks like they listed them in order of quality...ie. Ethyl, Times and Bluebonnet. Just my two-cents.

I think Alex is right about the 3/9 referring to the needles.

I know Transcontinental Oil entered several ventures with other oil companies. I have a photo of a "Marathon" bulk truck from the same era with Skelly signage and have seen mention of them dealing with Skelly.

I would guess they had an association with Bluebonnet in some area where this may have been put out.

Thanks for the info.
Chuck

I was led to believe that the Blue Bonnet metal band in the book was an obscure independent from the state of Texas. Blue Bonnet is the state flower of TX.

Collect small Oklahoma Oil Co.'s 1920's-1940's. Barnsdall, Cushing, Eason, Marland, etc.

I am thinking along the sames lines okoil1.

Transcontinental had "Marathon" stations in Texas, Oklahoma and a few other surrounding states during the 1920's.

I think Bluebonnet was probably a small Independent company, supplied by Transcontinental.

The name Bluebonnet was a big problem with my websearch.... tons of info related to the Texas State Flower bought up. I had to weed thru a lot of info searching, I did find one page that mentioned Bluebonnet as an oil company, along with a small list of others, but nothing more than that.

I work for Marathon and will contact our Home office about any possible info, but imagine it will turn up a blank.

My guess is that this was a third grade of gasoline of lesser quality than "premium" or "regular" Most major oil companies had such gas grades in the 30s. Note the needle kit also says "Marathon Oil Co." Ohio Oil Co. used that name for what was once Transcontential Oil for about 5-6 years, before selling off their refining & marketing operations in that part of the country. Road maps from 1931 & 1933 read "Marathon Oil Co., but the 1937 issue it becomes "Ohio Oil Co." The change would have come somewhere between 1933 & 1937.
BTW...There was once a BLUEBONNET beer produced by the Dallas-Ft. Worth Brewing Co. in Dallas. The only cans produced are quite rare and go $400+ in can collecting circles!!!

Information on Bluebonnet oil has been sketchy at best.
There was a Bluebonnet Oil Company founded by the residents of Mineola Texas around 1902-1906. A corporation was formed and stocks sold. (Book: Oil in Texas).
Michael Benedum and Foster Parriot, founded Transcontinental in 1919 by consolidating several small oil companies they had bought under one new name. Bluebonnet was NOT one of them though.
Benedum and Parriot also bought a number of small oil companies in the east Texas area were Bluebonnet was located. But have not been able to link the two.
I saw another mention of Bluebonnet oil in the Yates Field area of West Texas, but have been unable to relocate the information.
Do not have the "pink" globe book Roger mentioned. Would like to get the information contained in that.
Thanks for all the input and heads up on the oil can.
There is a Bluebonnet Oil Corporation. But is wasn't formed until the 1980's I think.
Chuck

Note; the E in Economical on the oil can is also the same "script" used on the Endurance on the card.
