A fool and his money will soon be separated!

I work hard for my money so as a collector, I always try to make sure I get a good price on an item I want in my collection. Do I care that the one selling it is making 3 or 4 times what he paid for it? I don't think about that if I want it, But also I'm still looking at market value on that item and I'm not going to buy it for an outrages price!

I have bought stuff before that I know I can turn and make a few bucks so I gave up long ago caring about the guy selling $400 signs for $4000, The way I look at it is if he gets his price, good for him as it's not going to change my idea of what that item is worth.

You can go to an auction and watch a $300 sign sell for $1200 because 2 people wanted it! A week later the same sign sells for $275 because it's in a different environment!

We have a big collector among us that I see quite often at auctions and shows that always buys a lot and then puts them on his site for a whole lot more than I see him pay. Do I care? No. Is it going to make me stop talking to him or dislike him? No. That's his thing and I always think he loves the stuff so much that he puts crazy prices on them to say "If you want this item, this is the crazy price I need to let it go".

But here we have this young bunch of guys doing the same thing that seem to annoy all of us. I know it's a different situation but who cares! Life is way too short to let that bother me.

There's not a day that goes by when I'm on here that I don't miss DB and how he lived for this stuff. But I also know he took it way too serious some days and it ate at him but That was what made him who he was and I loved him for it.

Maybe that's the answer here, Doug needs to take over and fill in and we'll call you DD! LOL

Thanks
Mike

I think you're only looking at half the equation. There is just as much, if not more greed on the part of buyers as there is sellers.

I've seen more bickering and fighting from members who feel their pm to buy something wasn't answered in the right order or their eBay bid was in vain because the seller decided to sell it elsewhere...as if that will be the last time ever to purchase that item.

I've seen friendships wrecked and members asked to leave this site because they allowed the greed of wanting to obtain a particular item get the best of them.

The older I get the more I realize it's just stuff, you'll never see a U - Haul behind a Hearse...you can't take it with you.

"Veteran Member" on the side of the Hearse. Probably more correct "Old Gas Member"

I personally think it's OK for everyone to put their own price on what they posses. If they want more cash for it than I want to part with, then I don't get to own what they have for sale.

I try to never put more feelings into it than that. Life's just too short to figure out what someone else may or may not be thinking, and why they do what they do ??

Yes Gary, it's ok for sellers to price their merchandise however they want. It's also ok for those of us that care about the future and integrity of the hobby to call out those that over price their items. Especially those that sell fantasy pieces for the price of originals.

I was at a petroliana show recently where the attendance was down, way down. This was the second show in a row at that venue where attendance was down. I talked to several collectors and dealers about it. A couple of dealers said attendance was way down at another recent show so it's not just a regional thing. The consensus was the huge increase in prices the past couple of years is driving a lot of collectors out of the hobby.

I personally know 4 men & 2 women who were just getting started collecting in this hobby over the last 7 years.
All said they sold their stuff & are gone today as they were so overwhelmed with the high prices, let alone the attention to detail in fakes today.
It was sad to see them completely walk away..
