The wife and I made an impromptu trip down to the Mecum Kissimmee event and went to the sale on Sunday of the Kim/Mary Kokles collection. It was an interesting sale for sure. I took some pictures to share...
Now I'm glad I did not go down there in person! It would have been hard to control myself! LOL As it is, I only got 2 pieces and they were high, but a few others I had marked, were REALLY high and went to other lucky buyers!

Thanks for posting Bryce. Interesting to see all the items displayed like that!!
FWIW, Here is another example that shows the ridiculous prices realized at these auctions these days. So many people at them just ain't to bright. You can get this sign, in this condition, on ebay every other month for $250-$350, without the premium!!

Steve Coppens Always interested in Sunoco items! Really want a Sunoco National pump ad glass!!
Very nice display of items for sale . Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures. Makes you wonder where it is all going to end ? With investments tanking , I wonder if those with so much expendable income are seeing petro as the safe haven for the near future. Seems like the sky is the limit on these recent auctions. Kinda scary if you ask me !
Wanted TEXACO related items & SUNOCO related items .Signs -Globes et'c. Oil Cans - Grease cans .
The pumps were not out of sight though. Makes one rethink the pump side.
Have to wonder if shipping might be a factor?
Shipping is not a factor. The company Mecum uses for shipping seems to be great so far. I was quotes less than 500 to get the pump I bought crated and shipped from Fl to northern MN.. Not too shabby if you ask me.
Was there too... Great to watch some of those rare pieces go. Kim and Mary are good people. Had a chance to chat with them during the auction. They were more than willing to take the time to talk/answer questions and even give a chance to hold/drool over a few things during the preview.
Bryce, where were you sitting? (I was over by the entrance) Probably passed several OG-er's without even realizing it.
i started sitting at one of the tables, center & 3 rows up from the walkway that went thru the arena. but I was moving around quite a bit, in an attempt to keep warm, ha. Sat on the end closest to the RoadArt for a long time too. I was one of the few there with my wife as well.
I will say... the Mecum crew sure does know how to get you in a bidding mood at 9am! Here's a clip that I recorded with my phone... (notice how empty the place was though)
Thanks I'll stick with Morphy's.Mecum to big.Customer service at morphy's is excellent. You have a problem you know who to call.Descriptions are way better too.
Great pictures Bryce. I got on line with interest in the two Seaside globes. But at 12k for a single Grade and near 11k for a Silver Gull, this old poor boy quickly became a spectator. The logic escapes me, but I guess they had their reasons. And more power to Kim and Mary.
i know who bought the Seaside globes... and while pricey, they sure will look great sitting next to the Seaside sign that was also in the sale & bought by the same person
Glad I already have the sign and the Grade globe bought years ago. I guess this new environment at these big auctions is a little overwhelming and may take some getting use to. Not sure if I'm just not used to it or I'm just cheap.

welcome to the club, haha... I certainly felt the same way while sitting thru the auction.
but for the most part, a lot of the common stuff went for normal prices. I am by no means a 'big spender' and I was able to buy 9 items... 4 of them I plan to resell even. but the really clean oddball stuff sure did go sky high
those were items in the other days of the Mecum auction, not part of the Kokles collection. i believe many of those had reserves. The whole Mecum Kissimmee event is over a week long, and I only went for the Kokles auction.
Hello, Kim and Mary here. As I said on the new members page I will provide some thoughts on our own auction and reply to some of the comments here. First, we would like to thank all of those who participated and supported our auction, especially those who took the time and expense to drive to the middle of Florida. Being self-employed, we had hoped for a successful auction for a retirement nest egg, and you guys (and some Mecum buyers) made it happen. Secondly, I want to make clear there were no reserves and nothing passed in our sale. As someone stated, our stuff was a stand alone sale on Sunday with only our stuff. Everything sold, and above our expectations for the most part. We attend a lot of auctions, and this was the first time ever sitting at one and not having a bid card - weird but refreshing feeling. As with most auctions, some things brought less than expected, but overall it would have been a challenging day had we had a bid card. For those of you who found it frustrating, please don't hold it against us - we just gambled with no reserve and it was a success. Why was it successful? In our opinion, there are several reasons. First, it was a fresh to the market collection, never before seen or offered for sale, and going unreserved (you can buy it!). If I say so myself, it was a nice variety of signs, globes, cans, and a few pumps which drew a lot of attention. Secondly, we had kept all of our contacts we had met over the many years and tried to make sure everyone knew about the sale. Thirdly, and I cannot stress this enough, Mecum was a big part of the success. They brought buyers to the table I would have never known and most likely not known to Morphy. They provided Mary and I our own room in a high traffic area. When we arrived they had 15 showcases set to place the globes, signs, and smalls, and wood wall to display the signs. They allowed Mary and I to set up or direct the entire display. It was as if we were displaying our collection for the first time at home, and invited anyone to come visit for two weeks. This is the kind of exposure Mecum provided for us. We also were there for two weeks to answer questions, greet people, and show them the stuff. It was a blast.
Forgot to include - we are not abandoning the hobby. As a matter of fact I bought an oil can Wed night after our sale so we will still be buying, selling, and collecting. See ya.
It's great to see that it went well. I know we talked before hand about the gamble, but you felt you did the right thing and the sale bore that out. Congratulations on assembling a wonderful collection and letting others have a shot at it. Only sorry I couldn't get a part of it.
I agree with everything in Kimnmarys post about how the sale was conducted, and the way that Mecums handle their sales. Martha and I did not have as big a sale as theirs, however Mecum sold our collection in November 2015 and I know their staff was a big part of the success. As far as prices go,I will quote an old livestock auctioneer (Emmitt Trainor) about prices. "Are ya buyin or are ya sellin?"
^^^funny part about it Norm... your auction was in Iowa in November, Kim/Mary's was in Florida in January... the weather was about the same for both. Cloudy, Cold, Windy... wish Mecum would do something about that!
