Welcome to Oldgas! Clean them as best you can. This will hold true with signs, pumps, cans. Soap and water won't hurt anything.

Clean them but be careful! For example, NO 409! It will eat through paint on old oil cans. I did damage to several before I finally learned my lesson.

For cans that I clean I use a brand new or clean red shop rag dawn dish soap and water. The red rags are abrasive enough to remove the most of the grime while being soft enough to not take off paint.
