Hi, Just wondering how a nice sign over the years gets "chalk spots" on one side.
And better yet, how to get rid of them?
Sign has been in dry storage for years....Not exposed to light or moisture.
Thanks?

It would help viewers to know what material the sign is made of....tin, porcelain, masonite, etc.......but ultimately, a photo will be needed IMO.

Darin,,,Thanks for the input,, Sign is porcelain, I spoke with a body shop person today, He suggested that it sounded as if the sign had
been sprayed with clear coat,,, I didn't have the sign with me so he was just guessing... Thanks again
PS: I have some where a mobil flying red horse "wind sock" Came from a farm auction 30 years ago,
Is new old stock, never flown, Nice except in had a mud dobber nest on it.. I have no idea where I placed it...
In storage some where around here..... I'll give u a buzz down the road when I start going thur storage sheds..Might be a couple years...
Thanks again

I have never heard of porcelain chalking, but it frequently happens to paint. I had a painted goodyear sign that chalked. I cleaned with soap and water until my sponge showed no sign of chalk, then cleaned with a degreaser and followed that with a clear coat.

I usually don't have any problems with clear coat in general, chalking would be weird in my opinion. BUT I do remember one time years ago when I used a crazy amount of clear over a porcelain sign and I had white discoloration in random locations. Thought I'd have to strip it, but when I let it set for a few months the white cleared up on its own, which was a nice surprise. I haven't cleared a porcelain sign in years though.

Sometimes if you shoot clear when the humidity is high, you can end up with a 'blush' in the clear.
It can be temporary or permanent.
Later . . .
