Hello All, Was out and about today and a local junk dealer has a very attractive Bowser 585, very solid, he said it came out of a barn where it had been stored for years, and it looks it. Here is my question. It has the faded remnants of a Shell Kerosene decal on the door. The pump's current prevalent color is a 60's looking mint green, sounds odd, but looks cool. There is also red and yellow showing in areas. I noticed on the top and sides the paint was really flaky, so I flicked off a couple pieces and it was yellow underneath. I realized then it had yellow porcelain top and side panels. This obviously explains the Shell decal on the door. The doors however do not appear to be yellow porcelain underneath. Should they have been? When I opened it up it looks like they were originally red. It's a very cool looking pump, but I think the asking price is too high. Does the porcelain panels increase the value any? He has $900 on it and feels he can get close to it. It is complete, inside and out to my eyes. If a guy could strip the mint green off and show the yellow sides and red doors, it would be a nice Shell survivor pump. I'm not a pump guy really, as I don't have room for them, but this one is an eye catcher. Thanks, Darin

I have purchased 2 Bowser 585s which I am restoring into a single pump. Both had painted panels, as the finish was removed with sandblasting. I don't think a porcelain finish could be blasted off.

A commercial sandblaster can blast off all the porcelain and leave a clean surface with which to work...We do it all the time.....FYI. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I certainly wouldn't want to remove the porcelain, but was wondering if a porcelain pump should have had porcelain doors as well, as this one does not. And does the porcelain top and sides increase the collectibility/desirability of the pump? Thanks, Darin

I stopped this morning and took a couple pics.....I guess it's more of a blue, but still cool looking.

On my Bowsers, the white plate that surrounds the computer is a porcelain finish. The frame, side panels, top and doors are clearly painted. This was easily removed with home sandblasting equipment. When I did the research for refinishing the pumps, I was provided paint codes. Were any Bowsers ever produced with a porcelain finish? Other research I did indicated that porcelain should not be sandblasted because it is very difficult to remove and would result in warpage of panels. What type of items do you remove porcelain from with commercial sand blasting. Please, I am not being argumentative - just want to increase my understanding. Jeff

I am curious if a pressure washer would take off that blue/mint green paint.
Also, and keep in mind I am new to the hobby but I think that pump would bring $900 all day long around by me. It looks solid.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate your opinion. I think the non-original paints could be removed pretty easily and this would be a nice red and yellow survivor pump. Darin
