I have been slowly taking some of the overflow of my collection into my new dream garage that was built over 1 1/2 years in 2016 - 2017. The build took quite awhile to get it right but was well worth the effort. I acquired the latest oak showcase in April. This last week while on holidays I found some time to clean and refinish it. I was planning to put Imperial globes in its lower area but the 16 1/2" steel bodied ones are an inch too tall to fit. I can only fit a shorter one piece globe. The shelf brackets are homemade and not adjustable so the globes will have to go somewhere else. I want to keep all my Imperial collection together so I still have two other full showcases to move in. The collection in the house is just too full and I don't want to repeat that mistake in the garage. So the move is just a gradual one with no deadline nor set plans. It is more of a process to find out what works best in the space that I have. It is a great place to work and play in. Cheers, Don.

Thanks guys for all the kind comments. The house also received a number of upgrades: new sewer line, electrical box, sidewalks and steps to match the driveway, insulation and matching Hardi board siding. There are still a few items to do such as replacing the front and rear doors on the house and add an alley fence. Right now I am installing baseboards in the garage main floor. I am just a garage guy who has always wanted a decent one to work and play in. I just hope I can pay it off before I hit 70 and then retire debt free. At least that is the plan. Cheers, Don.

Just an update. The first showcase now has some appropriate feet on it and contains a few more cans and another globe on top. The second cabinet is upstair too and is filled with my earliest Imperial Oil tins. Many of these are from the teens, so around 100 years old. Not all in the best of condition but still remarkable that they have survived this long. Now the hunt is on for a set of four feet for this showcase.

Here are the photos of my Mobiloil. Since it was a secondary brand sold by Imperial Oil here in Canada there doesn't seem to be as many variety of tins like Imperial had. At least I haven't found that many here in Alberta. The gargoyles are great but scarce.

Here are the last two photos. The early gargoyle is one end of a 16 jar oil rack. Thanks Craig, my back is already hurting thinking about moving the pumps upstairs. They may just end up on the main floor. There are only half a dozen with two unrestored. Cheers, Don.

Well the third showcase is nearing completion with just the mirrored back doors to finish. It is now upstairs and filled with the last of my Imperial 3-star and later Esso items. It has taken quite awhile to rebuild. When I purchased it a few months ago the top bevelled glass was broken, the front 6 foot long glass had two major cracks in it, and when taking the glass out I found the two front wooden corner posts were busted and needed replacing. I later decided to change the front glass design to two shorter more manageable pieces. Creating the three front wooden uprights, which are made up of three pieces each, took some time to get right but I finally got there. I wasn't sure if the Esso and the Imperial globes were of the same vintage until yesterday when I looked in a Imperial dealer Christmas give-away booklet which has a 1938 calendar in it and has an advertisement with both globes. So a neat discovery that they belong together. Cheers, Don.

I haven't had a chance to move any more showcases in the garage yet, but it will happen in the near future. The present difficulty was what to do with all the can racks that I brought upstairs. They take up a lot of floor space and can be awkward to display properly. So my solution was reverse logic: whatever goes down must go up. I spent the weekend building a couple of 12 foot long shelves and attaching them to my tall wall. It worked out well for this group though there may be some moved around later on. I know if had just built a lot of narrow shelves and placed the cans side by side I could put up a lot more. However to me the racks give the cans more context in groups especially when you have the original signs to go with them. The only downside is that this is just half of the racks that I want to move in and this is my only big wall. So another problem now to solve. Cheers, Don.

Well with spring finally here I thought it was time to start hanging some wall signs on the main level of the garage. I've always wanted to do one wall in a British theme to reflect my car's heritage. My Brit-wall has some products that the car originally used such as Castrol motor oil and Dunlop tires. The Canadian Dominion Royal tires name also reflects this history. It took two weekends to put it all up and I am quite happy with it. Not all the signs are pristine but I've always bought what I could find and afford at the time. It is feels great to finally see them hung together in context with the Jag. Cheers, Don.

Your garage is a beauty, Don! A couple of questions for you. Are those bare (no signs) can racks on the floor something you made, commercially available, or vintage? Also, I see a couple of Husky cans (fourth rack from the left), but the cans to their left have me wondering - Frontier Oil?

Thanks guys for the kind comments. Brian, the metal rod double-sided racks are original vintage ones. All of the rack cans are Canadian imperial quarts so there would be no Frontier. At least I am not aware of any Canadian connection. The Husky quarts haven't made it to the garage yet. I still have to install a couple more shelves so I can move another dozen or so racks out of the basement. Cheers, Don

Thanks for the reply, Don. I keep hoping to one day find a nice, basic rack for my cans but they are hard to come by around here. I'm in awe of your Husky can collection. The differences in "standing dogs" and fonts is interesting. I've not seen the dog with the bushier tail. Must have been a Husky Oil Ltd. of Canada design.

Well I had some free time this past week to work on the collection and things went well. Two more shelves were put up to hold additional can racks. Then I decided to bring up most of the other racks out of the basement and see if I could make some sort of interesting floor arrangement. I really like how it is turning out though there will be no more show cases moved up. Where the table and chairs will end up has to be determined yet. I'm now building a couple of shelves for globes. I am glad that I haven't a fixed plan and left some of this to chance as well as input from a few friends who could give different perspectives. Cheers, Don.

A bit more progress as I pick away at this when I can find the free time. Two shelves installed for a few globes. Unfortunately a couple of the ceiling lights block their views somewhat so I may have to change those. I should fire the guy who designed the electrical layout and installed the ceiling lights but he is the only one who works here for free and that's me, lol. Also put up the White Rose signs and did a bit of rearranging of the can racks so I could have the table and chairs in the middle of the room. It would have been great to have a large sofa and wide-screen tv next to the bar but that isn't going happen here. Not sure how much more I can move in but it is turning into a great room to hang out in. Cheers, Don.

With the start of a new year I thought to post an update of my slow progress from this fall and winter period. Some of it has just been fine tuning by moving around pieces where their location just made more sense. Other areas are new displays. Some of the items have been scattered throughout the basement so it is nice to see them together for a change. I find it interesting that by moving a piece or display around from where it has sat for 10 or 20 years it changes visually. Could be that you get so used to something being in a certain spot that you just take it for granted and it doesn't have that appeal of the latest piece that you just bought. Anyway here are some photos to enjoy. Cheers, Don.
