Found 2 of these in a barn in Maine. 1 was dirty and the other painted over. So after searching this site for information, and after several attempts at softer options, I started to use oven cleaner. Wow what a difference. I was afraid at first but finally saw results. I would spray and count to 6 and start vigorously wiping. The sign is painted tin. Covered the wood frame with painters tape. Came out better than expected.

Thanks guys!

I honestly didn't expect those results. I kept checking my white cloths for paint color and no black or orange being removed. But I still continued to only leave the cleaner bubbling for 6 sec. I just didn't trust it. Would rather have spent the extra time than lose original paint. I finished off with Dove soap & warm water 3 time rinse

I love finding those painted over signs. It has been my experience that the paint has actually preserved much of the original gloss. Gotta be pleased with those results Jamie. Saved another one.

Daaaaaang. Nice job! What a sweet sign. It can be a difficult and tedious task to save a painted sign, but great work pays off. Great job.
