Hello everyone, I have recently purchased an Oilzum paper sign at an advertising auction. I have attached 4 photos to this post and I also sell on eBay so you can see it there along with my other items if you wish. I do extensive research on every item that I buy and sell to make sure not only that the customer is happy, but that I myself can sleep at night knowing that I sold a genuine product. I’ve even sold a few items to a few fellas on this forum. However, I have a prospective buyer questioning the authenticity of this particular item. He states that a gentleman in Cincinnati reproduced hundreds of these in the 90’s. As I stated above I do extensive research on the items I buy and this one was no different. I subscribe to worthpoint and only 8 of these have been sold in the past 10 years. That’s at a rate of less than 1 per year. Even some of the rarest signs have rates higher than that. So if someone reproduced hundreds of them wouldn’t the rate of which they hit the market be higher than less than one per year? Sorry for the long winded post I just wanted to explain the situation. Any information you have would be helpful. Thank you

What would I be looking for while using the black light?

Sorry I usually purchase porcelain and metal signs. This is my first foray into paper products. I just do this to support my habit. I’ll buy 3 or 4 high dollar items at an auction. I’ll keep one and sell the others to pay for the one I really wanted. I’ve sold a lot of really nice things but I also have a neat little collection.

Been to countless gas bashes, collections, swap meets, auctions, etc etc and have never seen a real version of this. Just these signs which were made to look old and dated 51.

I see they are reproducing this sign into small porcelain signs now.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Oilzum-Motor-Oil-Car-Truck-Tractor-Motorcycle-Farm-Gas-Oil-Porcelain-Metal-Sign/143659866746?hash=item2172cb9a7a:g:P5cAAOSw9GJfElVX

But I have yet to see them do it with the original paper sign. This porcelain thing is brand new, and after they see what mine sells for I guarantee the market gets flooded with fakes (same thing is about to happen with a particular Orange Crush thermometer I just sold for $900).

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1950-s-Orange-Crush-Soda-Bottle-Thermometer-Advertising-Sign-Gas-Oil/373113363240?hash=item56df4a1b28:g:59QAAOSwIYxfC4SW#vi__app-cvip-panel

Once you make it worth their while, they ruin it.

Sorry I guess I don’t know how to make links clickable. I’m old give me a pass.
