I'm in need of a couple 15" metal bodies who has the best ones at a good price.I purchased 1 a couple weeks ago & the snap rings won't go in because the lenses don't fit the body properly.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom:

Did you buy a new body - or an old body?

The new bodies that Mike Slama has had manufactured are quite nice (I sell them too), but . . . one side is slightly smaller than the other so a lot of times one lens will fit one side, and then the snap ring won't seat on the opposite side.

This is especially true with reproduction lenses produced BEFORE these bodies were manufactured.

I had to adjust my glass 'blank' size to combat this problem.

And, I hand select lenses to fit these bodies from my 'old stock lenses' prior to sending them out to my customers if they order a body and lenses at the same time.

I have never had this problem with the aluminum bodies I sell since the openings are larger - as are the snap rings.

I hope this helps.

Later . . .

Jim

Hey Tom

I have purchased several of Mike Slama's 15 inch metal bodies. I have had them painted by powder coating......and I have never had any problems with the lenses fitting for both reproduced lenses or originals. IN the past, I have known people to have problems with the aluminum spun bodies from Canada but since Mike had his supply made, I haven't had any problems. As in ANY TYPE of Manufacturing.....a bad one could slip through. That could be the case of a metal body for a gas pump globe......or the toaster you just bought at Wal mart. As for these perfectly produced bodies.....you won't go wrong. There was no skimping in the process of reproducing these.

I've sold around 400-500 of Mike's 13/15 hi/lo profile bodies and have had issue with 1 maybe 2.

Guys:

As I stated, I sell Mike's new reproduction bodies too. I agree with you all, they are the nicest bodies on the market.

But . . . every one I have ever had has one side slightly smaller/larger than the other. Just make sure your lenses will fit with the snap rings in place BEFORE painting or powdercoating.

Sometimes it's as easy as swapping the lenses side-for-side.

And make sure to flatten the locating 'bump' at 6:00 if the lenses you are putting in the body don't have the corresponding notch in the glass. Otherwise, you run the chance of busting the lens upon installation - or shortly after.

Later . . .

Jim

Bob:

I'm sure it is my lenses. At least the ones that were produced before these bodies came on the market.

And the opening size difference may affect the fitment of other lenses made by other manufacturers too. I don't know about that since I don't make their lenses!

As I stated in my original post, I adjusted the size of my lens blanks so my new lenses would fit these bodies (and every other 15.0" body on the market!).

That still doesn't change the fact that one side of Mike's new body is a different opening dimension from the other - which I thought might be Tom's problem.

I have 7 of Mike's globe bodies, all measure exactly the same on both sides. Snap rings fit perfectly too. As with all Mike's stuff, I haven't seen better.

Measured/changed lenses in 6 of the stamped bodies I got from Mike, can't figure out the "difference" in size from one side to the other. Lenses & snap rings fit great both sides in all the bodies. Got rid of the aluminum bodies that I used to use; lenses "slid around" in 'em & didn't like the "look" of them. The stamped bodies lok great wih new or original lenses in them.

T-way..... I don't know nearly as much as these other guys posting on this thread, but what I do know is that I bought several sets of lenses from Lance before he sold you the business and they all fit perfectly in Mike Slama's steel body's.
The lenses I have gotten from Mike fit perfectly too.
Maybe I got lucky and got the "west coast version" like Tim said.
Looking at your web-site I don't see any warning on the steel bodies being smaller on one side than the other.
Looking at Mike's web-site I see a "craftsman" who is extremely proud of his product.

the lenses I'm having trouble fitting in one side are original 15" blue seal lenses. One side of the globe does appear to be smaller than the other.I do not know who made the body.I purchased it from someone other than the maker.I just order a 15" body from Seth we'll see how the lenses fit in that.I still need a couple more bodies but I want to be sure lenses are going to fit properly. I don't want to have any break or fall out.The body I have I can still use for a single socony ethyl lens I have but I want to get the Blue seals in a body. I also just aquired another pair of Socony lenses I will be needing a body for. Thanks for all your advise I greatly appreciate it.Thats why this is my first and last stop on the net everyday.
