I have come into a pair of Southwest 72CR-1 pumps that I am thinking about restoring.
I haven’t even begun anything, so figured I’d ask here. What are some must do’s or definitely don’t do’s that I should know before I begin?
Is it generally worth trying to get them back in working order? Just superficial cosmetic work? Leave them with a much more rustic finish?
I really don’t have plans to sell them, but was thinking I may keep one for display outside my garage, and the other will either complement it, or may be donated to an auction for a worthy cause later if I get them nice. So resale isn’t necessarily a concern, but I guess I should always preserve them as best I can.
Additionally, does anyone have any links or reference for color schemes that might have been on them to begin with? It looks like they came from what was most recently an Exxon station, since there’s a vinyl sheet with the Exxon tiger cartoon mascot. But seeing as how stations changed partnerships, I don’t know if they’re were originally Exxon. Likely could have been Mobil or P66 based on our area.
If it helps, looks like they were last used at 44¢/gal in Texas 😂
