Just wondering what everyone does to clean a newly found metal can? What do you do to treat or clean rust on the can?
I like to use dish liquid and give the initial bath, but never sure what to do about rust and other stains that might be there.
Thanks!

I always use old gas in my jug from gutted pumps. Works great on cutting grease and doesn't harm the paint. As far as rust goes, its kind of there to stay, however prep & etch works good on rusty signs and rocker cans so should work on oil cans.... but can dull the paint if left on too long, so be careful.

Has anyone tried Evaporust on any signs or cans? Its supposed to neutralize the rust. While I have not tried it with painted items, my experience with zinc plated tools is that it dulls or eats away at the zinc plating.

Prep & etch will bring back some life to a rusty sign. Evaporust takes rust and other stuff to bare metal. It does NOT neutralize rust, as you stated…. It eliminates it to bare metal. Evaporust will probably destroy your can. I use both products regularly.

Put it in a spray bottle and do ten minutes, wash off, see what you have. Repeat as necesary,
