This months POTM will be the Tokheim 39 Short.

The Tokheim Manufacturing Company was founded in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1901 to produce a Kerosene and bulk oil pumping system designed by John Tokheim. In 1947-1956 Tokheim produced the short 39, which was called a Lo-Boy. There are several different models of this 39L.

The 39L HR was produced between 1947 and 1952. It had a large window and brackets inside to keep the glass in place. The hose is on a reel.

The 39L-EZ was produced in 1947. It also has the large window, but the hose outlet is on the top of the side.

The 39L-RA was produced in 1947. It also has the large window, but the hose outlet is in the middle of the side and has a hose cable.

In 1947 to 1951 the 39L-EZ was produced with a smaller window held in by rubber. The hose outlet remained on the top of the side.

The 39L-EP is the same pump as the 39L-EZ but with add glass panels in the door.

The 39L-RP was produced between 1947 and 1951. It had the smaller windows, but the hose outlet is in the middle of the side and has a hose cable. It also has add glass panels in the door.

The 39A was produced between 1952 and 1956. It also had the smaller windows and the hose outlet is in the middle of the side, but the doors lift off.

The 39 AP is the same pump as the 39 A but with add glass panels in the door.

The 39 B was produced between 1952 and 1956. It had the smaller windows, the hose outlet is in the top of the side, and lift off doors.

The 39 BP is the same pump as the 39 B but with add glass panels in the doors.

Some of the 39 Lo-Boy's did come equipped with stationlighters.

Instead of showing a breakdown of a particular model, I'm going to show some differences I have found on this pump.

This base is steel and is 19" X 24". Some of the tall 39's use this base. Someone cut a piece out of this base on the upper right corner.

This base shows the locking plate for the doors that lift off.

This picture shows the frame. The legs are 53" long.

This picture shows another style of framing. Notice that the top fits lower on the legs and that it does not have the side bracing.

The next two pictures show the latch assembly that I have seen on this pump. The pivot point goes on the side with the hose outlet. Some of the tall 39's use this assembly.

The next two pictures show the pieces that hold the meter to the frame. The single mount side goes on the side with the hose outlet. Some of the tall 39's use these mounts.

This picture shows the nozzle hanger and shut off. Some of the tall 39's use this piece.

This picture shows the turn back assembly. Some of the tall 39's use this part.

This picture shows the gas manifold attached to the top of the pump.

The next two pictures show the gas manifold but notice that the glass is shorter than the other manifold. This takes a special faceplate that necks in, and has no beauty ring.

This is the same type of manifold that is used on a tall. I have seen these used on a short but the bracket that attaches it to the top is the same style as the tall but shorter.

This is the light assembly.

This picture shows another style of light assembly. Notice that it has a push pull on and off switch.

These are the two styles of hinges used on the short. I have been able to interchange them. These are the same styles used on the tall.

This is the crank side and is 14 1/2" X 54 1/2".

This is the nozzle side. There is a lever that the nozzle sits on that turns the pump on and off. This side came off of the later style pump that has the rubber in the doors that retains the door glass.

This is another nozzle side. The nozzle rest bolts on the side and there is a round push button just above the rest that turns the pump on and off. This side came off an early style pump with brackets that hold the door glass in. This particular side is aluminum.

This is a later style door with the rubber used to retain the glass. It is 17 1/2" X 52 1/4". I have heard of other doors being differnt sizes but have not run into it.

This is the early style door that uses the retainer brackets to retain the glass.

This picture shows the brackets used to retain the glass.

The next two pictures show the locking assembly used on the non-hinge doors.

The next two pictures show the top used on the short. They are the same as used on the tall.

There are alot of differences in these short pumps so when you need parts make sure of what you need.

I don't have any pictures of restored 39 short pumps, so I hope some one else does. If you have any comments on problems or differences in the short 39's let us know. If anyone needs pictures posted just send them to me.

I just picked up an original unrestored 39L-RA and the tag says 12-51. It also has the small windows.
