You can buy the most culturally relevant piece of petroliana on the market right now. I call it The Porcelain Flag. I am selling our family treasure but am making a documentary about it.
You are buying a survivor. When BP took over Supertest in the early 1970s, they didn't just take the signs down; they destroyed them to erase the old brand. Most of these were scrapped. To own a 5-foot diameter sign that survived that 'rebranding purge' is incredibly rare.
But more than that, they are buying a pre-1965 Canadian flag made of porcelain. This is from an era when the Maple Leaf was a symbol of economic resistance, not just a government logo.
Since I dug into this history, I’ve realized I definitely have to make a documentary film about the Supertest sign.
But for now, it’s ready for a new home. I just hope whoever buys it—whether they are American or Canadian—appreciates that they own a piece of the original resistance."
