This style of M was used from about 1959 to 1962 but never on a sign or on a can or container.
I have heard the rumor that it was experimental.

Station picture with what was called the straight sided or block style M.
Notice the last picture has the runner, the big M road sign & the block style M decals on the pumps.

The block style M shows up on a lighter, included on a ad glass & station pump decals.

Another rumor was that Monsanto threaten a lawsuit over the use of the block style M.

If a sign exists with the block style M, it might be a oil well sign.
The Marathon Pipeline has some equipment ID with the block style M.

The matchbook has a blue M in the frame from the runner sign.

Macmillan also used a block style M:

It was a transition logo from the Running Man to the Marathon logo. As they were ramping up to make the switch Monsanto threatened to sue if they didn't modify the M. At least that's the story we heard from our reps from Marathon.
