Here's a look a my shelf of "Wipe On" Auto Paint Cans. You don't need fancy spray equipment or even a paintbrush. You can paint your own car with a pad, pour it on and wipe it around. Apparently, this was a thing 75+ years ago.

Super interesting, Jim. I lived through the time period you mentioned, and was a car guy the entire time (and somewhat funds-challenged, too). And, I had never heard of this type of paint product before. Thanks for sharing. John
