Hey Guys & Gals,

It's time to share the petro relics that we've stumbled across in our recent travels, and check out what other people have found as well.

If you would like to contribute to this feature, simply post the pictures here or email them directly to me and I will post them for you. Be sure to include a story or description with your submissions.

If it's too close to the next installment, please note that I may hold your contribution for posting when the new FATW comes up on the 5th day of each month.
Send 'em in!!

Happy trails!

Wes

I'd like to start off this month with something a little different.

I was leafing through a book of old pictures, and recognized a little building that I'd always suspected was a station.

The picture I found was taken in 1949, when the station was still in operation. My research indicates that it was built around 1934 on the site of an old law office, and that there was a Shell station across the street from it as competition.

The building was used as a car lot for over 30 years after the Spur station closed. Unfortunately there's nothing left inside.

I decided it would be pretty neat to take a picture that closely matched the 1949 image, but showed what the scene looks like today. I had to adjust the vantage point a little to prevent a traffic signal pole from getting in the way, but I think I got it to come out pretty well...

1949 Image

2007 Image

Notice the above-ground storage tank in the 1949 image, and also the old buildings and lush greenery that are now absent...

The building is pretty original still. The half-brick wall on the right side was removed long ago. Unfortunately the half-wall on the left side was demolished within the last year.

Here's a close-up of the 1949 image, showing the whole setup...

I'm wondering if the shelf-like box, which has a sign on the end with the word "FREE" might be the display of the dinnerware being given away.

I hope to be able to continue this work. It's difficult to find old photos of stations, and when I do, they've usually been torn down. I've got my sights on a couple more, so I'll see what I can do.

I'll post more old station images soon. Just thought it would be neat to do something a little different.

Wes

I was doing the same thing on Monday. Visiting old photo sites to see what it looked like now. Had an interesting time just trying to find the streets and talking with people along the way, asking directions, ect.
Trouble is the original pics are usually in a book and are hard to reproduce for a side by side display.
ALSO I don't know how to post pictures on this site.

Tip for scanning old photos in books.

Most scanners have a "Descreen" option in their tool box. May have a different name depending on the brand you have. It may just say Magazine, newpaper etc.
It will remove the dots you see on a printed page, like the ones that appear on the enlargement Wes made. A good tool to use if you want to make photos to frame.

Chris, you can email them to me if you want and I will post for you.
I bumped the image shack tutorial to the top that nochevys did. Look under General Petroliana

More of the rod shop.

I thought this was cool what he did with the globe on top of the pole. It lights up at night to. Also makes a nice screen saver.

These pumps where by a farm in MO. Could never find anyone home.

Well thats all for now.

I think they're new. I just noticed them about 2 months ago, all over central Texas.

Jack,

I didn't check close enough to see if they are redoing the pumps and all. I'm driving home again next week. I'll check 'em out.

Would this have been the first service station as you enter California, on route 66, at the top of Cajon pass. I have a photo of a station at that location.....

Lance, the station at the top of Cajon pass didn't have an address I could find on it but did have a sign that said located on old route 66. The closes street coming into it was Marpoisa. Jack
