This month we're going to feature "ETHYL" globes. It doesn't matter what company they're from as long as they have the Ethyl logo or the word Ethyl on them.

Here's one from my own collection:

I had to have this globe since my last name is Drake. This globe is from Drake's Refinery Stations Inc. They were an independant company from Michigan. These lenses would have been used on a plastic body. I put them on this Hull body. The globe dates from the 1950's.

We shouldn't have any trouble finding Ethyl globes to post because so many companies used them.
Bob

Here's one of my most recent globe purchases:

This globe is from Globe Oil Company of Kansas. It dates from the 30's or 40's. It's normally found with a Gill body, but this is the rarer wide glass version.

Here's one of my first globes:

This globe has the old version of the Capco body. Each half is different than the other. These were only made in 1932 and '33. This globe would have been used from 1933-1941. There were glass and metal body versions of this globe too.

Here we have a Rock Island Ethyl globe that was used from the mid 1940's until 1960. There were a few different color variations on these globes. This one is the only known example with these colors. The most common version has a bright yellow face. The Capco body on this one is also unique. It's kind of a creamy yellow.

The picture doesn't do this globe justice.

Rock Island was out of Indianapolis.

Here's a globe from Martin Oil Service, out of Illinois. These lenses should be on a Capco body since this globe wasn't used until 1962-'70.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I've sold alot of my petro stuff, including globes , so I could buy better globes. I had several globes, but didn't get serious about collecting them until about 4 years ago.

A couple of guys have told me they'd post some of their globes. There has to be literally hundreds of different Ethyl globes out there. Lets see how many we can picture here.

Here is Skelly Aromax with Ethyl on a wide body. Globe is NOS with the lenses still caulked in.

Come on guys. We need more pictures to keep this going. Lets see those Ethyl globes. This is my only one.

Home Oil of British Columbia, founded in the early 20's had stations throughout B.C. untill the 1960's when they were bought out by Imperial Oil (Esso) This lens is mounted in a capco body, but belongs on a banded glass body, and dates from the 1930's I believe. Home globes are very rare, as Home probably had less stations than other comparable companies, making any of the three known globes very hard to find.

Great Aromax globe Keith. This globe was used from the late 1920's until 1940. This is one of the harder Skelly globes to find. It's also the most colorful.

Thanks for posting it.

Thanks for the group effort in getting these rare globes posted.

The (Montana) Power Ethyl is from the 1930's.

The Big West Ethyl Gasoline is from the 1940's. I believe Big West was out of Spokane,WA.

The Litening Ethyl was from Yale Oil.

The Grizzly Ethyl is from the 1930's. The company is Northwest Refining.

Northwest and Yale were bought out by Standard of New Jersey.

Thanks for sharing these great rare globes Les!

We've had a pretty good response so far. It doesn't matter if they are common or rare, we want to see as many Ethyl globes as possible.

And the great globes just keep coming!

The Rose Ethyl is from the Rose Oil Co.,out of Mississippi. Its from the 50's.

Cavalier is from Flint, MI. in the 1960's.

Vance was from Indianapolis. The globe dates from the 50's.

Dixie Ethyl is from Dixie Distributors, MI. its probably from the 40's.

Hi Power Ethyl is from H. Earl Clack. Its a rare one from the 40's and 50's.

Hi Tower Ethyl is from Tower Oil out of Ohio. It dates from the 1940's.

I don't have much info on Airway. They were possibly from the upper mid-west. This globe is likely from the 50's.

Oriental was from Denver. This globe is from the 50's.

The D-X Ethyl was used from 1946-55.

Thanks Lance!
Bob

Nice lenses John! Thanks for posting them.
D-X used this version from'33-'46. If you run across a set of lenses like these without notches they're for a banded glass body.

Anyone else have some Ethyl globes or lenses they can share?

Here are three "ethyls" I have. The Tydol is metal bodied as is the Pure, but it is porcelain. The Tri-State is on wide glass.

Super globes Gary!
The Tydol is from 1935-41 era. Note the blue "burst" and the orange Ethyl logo. Very unusual.

This version of Purol Ethyl was used from the early 30's until 1939. Pure was one of the few to use porcelain bodies.

Tri-State was originally from West Virginia. It was bought out by Ashland in 1930. Ashland kept the Tri-State name as a secondary brand. This globe would have been from '46-'60.

Thanks for posting!

Great response on the Ethyl globes guys. We've got a pretty good selection pictured.

We've got metal bodied, porcelain metal bodied, glass, hull, and a few different colors of capco bodies represented.

We've seen both the early and late versions of the Ethyl logo. We've seen a few color variations on the Ethyl logo too. There are even some that just say Ethyl and don't have the logo.

There are major oil companies represented as well as their affiliates. We've got some small regional companies covered as well.

Even with all the great globes pictured so far this month we've just scratched the surface. There are literally hundreds of different Ethyl globes out there.

Don't forget to check out the Ethyl globes posted by Mr. Wadhams, Rex, and Morgan in different topics on this forum.

Keep up the great work!
Bob

There are some very nice globes here and still plenty to see so get them in here. I also wanted to add if any new guys have thought about buying a globe here are a few things you might want to consider. There are 2 globe books vol. 1&2 for Scott Benjamin and Wayne Henderson and they have some really good knowledge in there plus it tells you a lot about the repo's and what to look for so you don't pay big money for a them. The book is very accurate on prices and some are a little low. Ebay has had a lot of "common" globes lately that have been going very cheap. The shows are great for globes to but you might not find many great deals but not every thing we buy can be a "steal" plus the shows are great for meeting others in the hobby. If any body wants to ask me a question please do so or i am sure Bob (lastgas15) will also.

Jarvis is right about how good the globe books are. The descriptions and history are pretty accuracte. There are a few mistakes but thats definitely the exception. The pricing in the books is terribly outdated now. The better globes have gone up tremendously. Common globes have leveled off in price.

Thanks Bob(lastgas15) for the reminder I had another Ethyl globe. I meet Bob Sun. March 2 at Peotone show and we where talking and I forgot about this globe. It is not in the book as a Glass body globe but has the deep notches for glass. I was told that it is very possible I could have been for glass. I said I had meet Bob... I also meet Jim Potts there to. It was nice to put a face with a couple of great guys I interact with every day. Here is that Ethyl globe!

Thanks for posting this nice globe John.
This globe was used by Tidewater Oil Company. It dates from the '46-'47 era. This globe is only listed in the book as a gill bodied globe. It's not too surprising that it has shown up as a glass bodied version.

There's another version with black "Ethyl" that was found on gill and capco bodies.

John, how did you ever forget you had this globe? I've forgotten my wife's birthday, my annaversary, what time I was supposed to be somewhere.......but I've never forgotten what globes I had!!

We're still hoping to see more Ethyl globes posted here. They don't have to be rare or graphic. We just want to see as many as possible.

I hope to get a few posted myself that I saw at the Peotone show.
