I think we have all critized how people come up with prices (re-mohawk) and thats easy if its someone else's item. So here's little challenge/game. How about everyone look around in their collection and pick their best sign/globe,etc.(just ONE item). Post the picture and tell us all what value you put on it even though its NOT for sale....Might get some interesting pricing here!!!! I'll start.......10k

I dont have any high dollar signs nor am I an expert, but if that is in as good condition as it appears to be and is a double sided sign, your pricing may not be too far off. That is one nice sign and has automobile and animal connection - a twofor!!!! Plus the age of that tire. Awesome.

Frank will try to help with pic's...everything is the same as loading pic's on ebay except you add at the end after your JPG or GIF.
put this right in your repy at end of what you have to say.also remember image must be loaded on your server(same as ebay...)

Verry Strong Graphics on that one, wonder if anyone has seen another. It would sure run up there at a big auction, you know what them guys pay for strong graphics and extreme rarity!! They cant help themselves, they just whip open their wallets and throw themselves at the feet of the auctioneer, and when he cant stand it anymore the bidding stops.!!

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Glad I dont have to worry about conducting myself in that manner at an auction..dodogas

For you guys that are on AOL you get free server space on there server to load pictures to. Type FTP under [search] in the right top corner. Then select FTP SPACE, then SEE MY FTP SPACE, That is where you would upload pictures to. Your address would be something like this http://members.aol.com/youraolname/images/sign.jpg then put the at the end and the image will appear. Just play with it and you all will get it. Jim Potts... there are some places were you can get free server space if your not on AOL but i don't know of any do you?

It took me a while to go through my signs to determine which one was in the best condition, and would be worth the most. Here it is! I value this one about $6.00 I've shown the best side, the other side has some damage but shouldn't detract from the overall price.

Ok, so I'm having some fun here! chuckle a bit and join in.

Actually doc thats a good candidate for practicing your touch up skills, basic colors so it would be pretty easy to do.
I like taking the hammered ones and seeing how good you can make them look from 10 feet away.

Well Minuteman, I would have to say you are a little shy on the value of your sign. Im certain that there is a crazy out there who would kill for it!! If I was about 10K flush I might even get stupid. Then again I doubt you would part with it. If I only owned a good sign!! If I only had a good bank account?????? Or got lucky once?,,,,,

I wonder if this co has anything to do with the moto-meter co. with the graphics it looks possible. How about keeping this link alive by giving us YOUR idea as to the value of the sign. Remember we arent trying to buy it, just seems like everyone has an idea what things are worth but are afraid to say it. Ive got signs that people might think are worth $1000 and I wont part with for any $ they just cant be replaced. So What really is the value of say a Double sided Mohawk neon sign? Are you going to shop around and look at all of the others for sale out there? What others! How about a double Wayne 800? or a display Tokheim? is $10000 too much? Or too little.........We all have our price I guess if we REALLY want to get rid of something but when just letting it out for possible sale Im more like some of these other guys and the price is a little higher. On these super rare items it should be......Les

Does anyone know what the standard gasoline sign is worth? It's the only one I've seen like it.

I guess if you can make it an advertisment you can put it on anything if it works for you, just like people useing milk bottle carriers for oil bottle ones, if it works.

I found that globe the day after the hoosier gas show in evansville, in an antique store for 10$. The person had it labeled as a lamp fixture.

Is the globe worth something?

They might fit on a pump but so will a coffee can. I looked through all the books that I have and there is no "globe" like that. I would trust the old guys... if they say it is a lamps shade I would bet dollars to doughnuts it is a lamp shade.
Ummmm doughnuts....

The bottom of the globe has a lip in it that perfectly holds globe screws.

It also fits perfectly in a globe ring.

This is not the first time I have saw a shade exactly like this on a pump.

Ethan, I have this sign that I really want to be a "Gilmore" sign, it looks like the Gilmore Lion, it's porcelain, it's a great size, and someone once told me it was a Gilmore sign. But......it's not any more of a Gilmore sign, than your lamp shade globe is a gas pump globe. Sorry bud, but I'm with Dwaine.

Ethan,
Your "globe" is 100% light globe, not gas pump globe. That style light shade was used from the late 1920's through at least the 50's. I remember seeing my dad throw away lots of those when he remodeled an office building in the 60's. $10 is about the going rate for that type shade right now.

nothing says you can't put a gilmore decal on both sides of it, and a gilmore decal on the pump. so , to make your story also true, durring the war years , 1 and 2 they never made globes or porcelain signs , so you never know what might have went on a pump just to keep water from going inside, even though the globe books say it was used durring "" it wasn't made then, like I've said before , out here on the left side , most of the great west coast globes was broken out durring black outs, have fun with it , just don't try selling it as a globe,

If the globe did not have the recess ring, it never would stay in the ceiling fixture. Put some gasoline decals on it, and enjoy.

I have to add my two cents> You guys are too much fun. I love this stuff. This is the great escape for me. Ethan, you should see a picture of the globe that I put on one of my pumps. If I ever learn how to post... Yes another one who can't figure it out, I will post a picture of it. It is a lamp globe also that I thing looks killer on a pump. Your general store looks great! Rob

Hey we do what we have to do. I remember one time about 25 years ago, I couldn't afford a globe for a pump I was working on, so I bought an old milk glass vase that looked like a white fish bowl with a flat bottom. I turned it upside down, and wrote "GAS" on it with black paint. It fit in the globe ring. I was soooooo proud! Ha... Funny to think about some of the dumb things I've done.

I'll try and find the time tonight or this weekend to shoot a couple of my signs. I would like to get values on them from some of the better informed people on this site. I am not really sure of their worth - but I'm sure that between all of us, we can come to a value. I'll post them as soon as I get done importing them into my computer.

Later . . .

Heres one for you Paul, explain this? why is there no white in the wings , I've had a lot of A collectors want it and theres an other one with no white so I've been told. its also Baby Blue on the back side, value about $25.00.

as you can see the word flying is striaght not curved like most most of the A signs, my brother got this sign for me from a ranch where it was used in front of a work bench , it had a few dings in it from parts dropping on it, and Paul the deco flying A sign was bought by Sweetwaterjr, he paid to much for it , and Gene Autry had signs just like that, we never seen those type signs down here ,

Well Mr. Seaside, to be honest I thought you made that one up yourself. I never seen anything like it, whats Mr. Flying A man (Craig) say about it. Now give us the straight story on this. Maybe we should start a new thread and show signs and keep replys only related to the signs shown. I want to see more rare signs, so I can learn something!!! Paul

Dwaine, That was a special sign that Tidewater oil company made during the 50's. The reason the wings were blacked out was so that the U.F.O's that were flying around the California would not see the wings and think it was another U.F.O.. This is a very rare sign, because most of them were destroyed by alians from Mars. Where did you find it....

Yea Mr. Seaside gives us the real low down on this rare sign, like I say, I know just enough to get myself in trouble. Was bidding on this flying A station sign and got an email from a guy in Ca. says thats a sign off Gene Autry's ranch, so I stop bidding and who gets the sign but his buddy. Paul

Hi, I as many others have stated it is very very very complicated to post pictures here! Why not something a complete computer geek can understand, such as..... click here? Larry

This is one of my favorite signs. It is from Australia. The graphics are really neat. Look at the V in the plume on top of the globe face. The sign has been cut off at the bottom. It would have been 3 ½ inches longer according to the original tack holes. There are small nail holes that stick out in the front and the back of the sign is painted. This indicates that the sign was nailed on a wall with the picture facing in. I guess that is why it remains in such good condition. I didn’t pay much for it but it is one that I would never get rid of. Rex

Dick:

Very Kewl Sign! These have to be quite rare as General Motors only held the patent for Ethyl for a couple of years before selling it. They decided that they didn't want to be in the gas business - just the car/truck business. Of course this was way before they produced trains or refrigerators. LOL

I'd love to find one of those myself. I've got no idea what it's worth - but it is Kewl!

Jim,
Ethyl Gasoline Corporation was a joint venture between G.M. and Standard of New Jersey. The name of the company was changed to Ethyl Corporation in 1942. They're still in business today. I don't know how long G.M. was involved with the company. If you researched it I think you'd find that Ethyl Gasoline Corporation owned the Ethyl patents, not G.M. G.M. might have sold their portion of the Ethyl Gasoline Corp. I've got that info somewhere, finding its the problem. Anyway, Dick's sign is one of the earliest Ethyl signs. Its probably from 1923 or 24, before the GM/Esso partnership.

Hello everyone. This is a great forum. I've been reading it for a while now but never had anything to add until now. This sign was in my father's garage until he retired in the late 80's. At that time he gave it to someone who really wanted it. It moved about 120 miles away until last year when I got it back. To me it is valued priceless because of its history. http://www.suitorsgarage.com/garageoilzumsign1.html
The value on the website was a joke for someone who thinks he can buy it.

Well worth taking a look at, very well done. Very informative and looks like you have a lot of fun adding to it.
