OK, here's my stupid question for the day. What exactly are "Dealer" signs like the Gulf I just picked up as opposed to ones that have the same logo minus the word "Dealer"? I've never asked and I've never heard anyone say why. I was thinking that the dealer signs were at stations that the bulk plant dealer owned? Right or wrong? Are the Dealer signs any more rare?

Thanks,
Mike

at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Mike,
Some oil companies added the "Dealer" label on signage to let the public distinguish between dealer owned vs. company owned stations. However, I believe Gulf added "Dealer" to all orange disc identification signs in 1936 and used it until the 1960's. The "Dealer" label was then dropped when the "new" disc logo was adopted in 1963.

Other Gulf collectors may have more specific information on why Gulf went to the "Dealer" signs.
