I am in the middle of adding a shop addition to my existing shop. Its a 42x16 wide addition of which 32' will be enclosed and the last ten feet a covered area.

That said at the end of this area is an area big enough for a fake gas station island that will house a pump or two, a sign pole with a 42" DODGE/ PLYMOUTH sign and an oil caddy.

I am building this with engineered trusses because of my 100 lb snow load requirements.

So I know many of you guys/gals have created your own gas islands and I am looking for advise from the pros. I plan on bringing in electrical and maybe even an air supply line. I have water close by n a hydrant so I wont be adding water.


I have added pics of my site. I am getting ready to add the concrete soon.

I will probably put the island close to the front of this building and want a rounded end pump island. The sign pole will be in excess of 16 ft tall so no roof over the island.

I am a hotrod guy by nature but recently relocated from Nevada to Idaho on 175 acres. I plan on smoking my cigars on a bench in front of my shop/ gas island which has a pond view of my large pond.

I used to spend summers in Weiser. There are a lot of great street rodders in the area.

Very cool you have some space to do this! I Haven't yet built a mock up service station, but I would like to someday. I'm driving across country right now, and whenever I see a cool old station I take a pic. One day if like to replicate one of these stations, maybe at least. Anyway, I'd check out the old photos from the net and see if anything catches your eye. So far I like an old station in Calumet, MI the best, it has a curved entry and some interesting brick work, ironically I don't think there's an island. If I was building something like your describing I'd make it God awful impossible for people to steal, rash of thefts in rural areas has been scary. Sorry not much help.

Dave I am selling a rental I have in Weiser. Owned it for two years. I will use the proceeds to build my home on this 2 acre pond. The down side is that I have a 70 Cuda convertible, old 50s juke box and numerous pumps in my rental garage and have to find a place for them--shop here is over full as I had 4200 sq ft in Nevada, now only 1200.

Too bad you're so far away, I have extra porcelain panels from an old Marathon gas station that I disassembled. I used them to recreate the front of the gas station on the back wall.

How high are your ceiling and are you going to place windows in looking at the pond?

Looking at the picture I assume the last two posts will be the end of your canopy . It would be neat to make one of those stations you can pull under the awning between the station front entry door and lengthways with the pump island . Make it a circle from the camper to the feild where you can drive around the island 360 deg. It will look great whatever you do . You could pour a small side walk right out the front door to sit in your rocking chair and smoke the cigars ! Keep us posted . Nice looking start and nice place .
