wher can i find out more on the regulations concerning old tanks?is it true if you remove a pump.the tank must also be removed?does it differ state to state?let me know thanks mick

In PA the answer is no to the does the tank need removed with the pump question.
There are federal guidelines but states can be and often are more strict. Do a google search for "underground storage tank regulations IL", (if tank is in IL) figure out if the tank in question is regulated, and is it registered with the state already or is it exempt, like a farm tank under 1100 gal. for example. To be sure you may want to call the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal's Division of Petroleum and Chemical Safety at 217/785-5878.
May also be permit issues if going by the book... I prefer the Cliff Notes.
IMO = CYA = make a HYPOTHETICAL call, "what if a guy has a tank ....etc."

You can also go to the EPA's website,they have links to each state's agency that regulates UST installation and removal.Every state has different regs,permit requirements,whether or not you need a licensed contractor to remove the tank etc.In many cases the local fire department will want to get involoved too.

If the tank is empty and your area has a high water table, you won't have to worry about digging it up!

Hi all;
I know the rules have changed over time here in CA. I know of a old station here in Goleta that has not been a gas station for many years now and the tanks are still in the ground. When the pumps were taken out the tanks were filled with drilling mud. At that time it was the way things were done. Infact one tank is now under a main road. I do know the state wants the tanks but no one wants to pay for it.

found out from the number tokheim gave me that any thing under 1100 gallons,or that has not pumped gas since 1974 is exempt.talked to the owner he just doesnt want to sell at this time,but may someday,so ill just let it sit for awhile thanks for the replies
