Hey guys, I'm kinda a lurker here but intend to start posting more regularly. Got a quick question... I'm on my 2nd Wayne 70, got it off the farm complete with Firechief signs/hardware. Anyways, years of the elements have totally detroyed any chance of actually extracting the screws holding on the side panels. My other 70 didn't have this problem.

So, looks like I'm gonna have to drill them or cut them. My question to you all is, is there a replacement for the clamp pieces that these screws thread into? Once I drill the screw heads these will essentially be done as well. If nobody is selling repops, is there anything people have had good results with from the hardware store? I'm a pretty young guy (24) who restores pumps on a budget so any advice would be appreciated.

Chris, As far as I know, no one is making replacements for what you need. In my experience, you can "carefully" drill out the machine screw head. Once the pieces release the side panels, take a look at them. The machine screw usually sticks out the bace a quarter inch or more. I've had good luck clamping a good visegrip to the exposed threads.......grind the drilled front smooth to the clip.....spray with a really good lubricant.....and placing the clip in a vise......slowly try to extract the threads thru the clip. Works nine out of ten times. If that doesn't work......you'll have to drill out and re-tap threads. Good luck, Paul

Thanks Paul, thats what I was thinking about doing. Its funny, last 70 I did every single screw came right out.... this one, not a single one. This pump is even much straighter than the other, go figure. I fount some clamp back nuts at the hardware store that would probably do in a pinch, but I'd like to salvage as many of the original clamps as possible.

I found that I was able to coax some really stubborn screws out of my Wayne 60 using candle wax. Grab a torch, and let it wick it's way into the threads.

Also don't hesistate to wind a bolt/screw part way back in. You'd be surprised what a difference it can make sometimes...

if the slots on the screw strip out,ive had some luck using my dremal to deepen the slot and get a better bite on the screws

An Impact driver.. Scews, nuts bolts...
If you don't have one GET ONE....

I have a Snap On set and it's probably the most used in the tool box... Yep it's expensive but I wouldn't trade it for nothin' You don't have to hit it HARD..
Just some EASY hits.. Can't remember the last time I COULDN'T get a screw out....

Well, I ended up drilling out the screw heads and with the exception of one, I was able to use vice grips to extract the rest of the screw from the clips.

I'll look into that Impact driver though. Thanks guys.
