Try opening the door on the veeder root bottom cylinder and use your thumbs to spin the bottom gears. You’ll get a little more leverage. It’s a little rough on the thumbs, but you can handle it. Spray the ***** out of those gears with lubricant, and make sure no mouse nest residue anywhere in the VR. A tiny twig can hold it up.
I also took an old 1/4” socket and ground a groove down both sides, so I can put it on the shaft and spin the bottom shaft, when they are turning free. See picture.
