When I bought my Mae West it had already gotten a quickie repaint. I noticed that the metal surface was bumpy. Is this all from prior rust pitting? If it was originally smooth I guess I will hit it with a coat of filler and sand it smooth, then use filler primer also and paint.

are fry bumps like goose bumps?

Not really looking forward to the bodywork on this but I don't want to leave it bumpy. I'm gonna go Mobilgas I think, and not over restore it.

I would sand blast the skins and use metal glaze for the filler, its a lot "lighter" then bondo and a heck of a lot easier to sand. It is great for filling small stuff, but it is more watery then bondo so can be sort of trick to fill bigger spots. If you decide to go that route, use 180 grit sand paper on a soft block for sanding ( get a roll of 180 for a d.a. that way you can just stick it to it )
