I found this piece in an old tool box that was given to me.

Its a cool piece, in that its a TEXACO item. But its nothing more than a ruler, with a pocket clip. What I'm saying is, its not for any specific measurement, like an old fuel tank dipstick.

I wish I would have kept my old CHEVRON stuff like that..... Its costing me a small fortune to buy it on e-bay.....

Nope. I'm a CHEVRON guy. But there are plenty of Texaco guys here.

jay;
Primary purpose of that gauge by design is for measuring tread depth on a tire.

See how the pocket clip is considerably wider than the gauge, you hold it across the tread of a tire and slide the gauge down in between the treads to measure the depth.

I doubt it is intended for tires, unless the grooves are all 3/8 wide!!

In this area (and in tool catalogues) it is known as a 6 inch pocket rule with clip or machinist pocket rule.

I actually have a Firestone tread depth guage, maybe even 2 of them.

They look like a bakelite alarm clock with a pointer sticking out the bottom and a reset knob sortr of like on a stopwatch.

Not just a ruller,it has the fractional to decimal conversion on the back. I doubt that was intended for dressmaking and plumbing...

Well I don't make dresses.....I don't use it for plumbing.....hmmm, mabey I use it for
making clocks?????? Yes it has a conversion chart on the back......A machinists ruler to be precise.
And yes you can use clip as a depth guage.
And yes you could check tires with it.
I would think it would have been kept in the tool drawer in the service bay to check all
kinds of measurements on parts....tires are parts.

Didn't mean to get a huge debate going on this with my reply. Most of the Mechanics I know use those to primarily measure tires and maybe radiator hoses, etc with. Probably because they were FREE and fit nicely in the pocket so they were handy.

I use to carry one, for doing DOT log books. Perfect size, still got one aroung here somewhere.

Good to know we have some old tool experts on here... Really... I just bought a large collection that has several old mechanics tools that I have no clue what they are. Will be posting them soon.
