Is it possible to remove the whitish film on a porcelain sign. The signs are mainly FIRESTONE and the sellers on eBay THINK the signs should clean-up. Will they, and how? Thanks for your help!!!

Gerald:
I've had limited success with removing the whiteish film you mentioned. The best way to remove any of it - that I have found - is to machine polish it with automotive paint polish. I start with the least aggressive polish I have and if that doesn't work, move to a medium polish. follow up with a good carnuba wax and you're all set. Usually you can remove some (not all) of the discoloration. You have to remember that the film you are seeing is the effects of acid rain over the years eating into the actual surface of the sign. Hope this helps! Jim

Clean the signs real good. Spray them with an automotive clearcoat. A nice hard clear enamel or acrylic. They'll look like the day they were baked. If you wipe heavy water on them, that is how they'll look. Works great.
