my wife just brought this home for me from our cabin.met a guy over the phone, had her stop on her way home to pick it up.she thinks i'm nuts to buy this sight unseen, but the gentleman was very interesting to talk to,and sounded honest and straightforward. Now i'm not dissapointed in the least, this is my first large sign, but she can't belive i bought it.how old is it,and what is it actually worth?any pics of a finished one.thanks mick.ps i will let her read your answers.

Love is in the eye of the beholder...

If you like it, who cares what we think.

I'm guessing 60's-70's vintage since that's the way I remember it from when I was selling parts. Also because it's painted not porcelain.

As to value...that's too subjective for me, it's worth what you were willing to pay for it.

Mick,

Poor Man is being kind and diplomatic. Frankly, I hope you didn't pay more than 25 bucks for it. But if YOU like it, that's all that counts.

Happy collecting.

Paul

Depends what else he has or finds you!!

I would pay a hundred for that sign if it meant a Wayne 60 for 400.00!!

Usually though paying to high to get more can start to backfire on you...

This is a good topic in that newer collectors have to learn somehow and frankly not everyone can afford mint pieces.

On the signs I buy what I can afford. The nicer stuff goes in the office and the junkers go in the garage. I am always trying to replace the signs in the office with better items. Over time I am getting a great looking office and my garage getting better looking because of the signs I bring down from the office. I then pull signs from the garage to take to bashes to sell to buy better signs for the office. I call it trading up. My wife calls it being frugal...

Thanks for posting a picture of your sign!

Mick,

Are you sure that's a porcelain sign? It looks like painted metal to me. Normally, porcelain will not rust through like that unless the porcelain is severely chipped. Take a closer look.

Good collecting!!

I'm with Paul on that one Mick. I seriously doubt that it is porcelain. I have seen some pretty nasty porcelain signs and they have never looked like that. You would not have the loss of the top colors (orange and white) like that sign. Plus the vintage of that sign makes it unlikely.

I think 75 bucks is just fine. I've seen the frames alone sell for that much.

I can't tell if the sign is leaning against the pump behind it, or if the frame is mounted on a base, as the bottom of the frame is cropped in the photo. It seems to me that if I had a high grade sign like this one, I'd pay $75 just for the frame and base to mount it on...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Not porcelain.
This is a painted steel sign. Blue background, orange circles, white letters. There is a blue shadow from the lettering going toward the upper left in each circle.

Painted Tin For Sure... and well worth the price you paid because you love it.. I buy for my enjoyment, my pleasure, and because it makes me happy. I collect what I like.. and if I can afford it, and it makes me happy, I'll buy it. My collection consists of items that I would not part with. Each has a special meaning to me. Be Happy with your treasure Mick... You did good.
