I was recently trashed on this website by Dwaine Buck. When I saw what he said I emailed him as I felt this was not the place to discuss how we feel about each other's comments. He sent me this email:
Well Good morning Jack ,
I'm sorry , but all you had to do is return to me a( i don't know )
. or that info will cost you , i'll tell my friend Ron Scobie who asked me
to partisapate on this talk shop , because theres not enough west coast
information , thought I might be of some use , but i see now that its a
business , or good old boys from back east only thing , thats o k with me ,
thanks Jack , Dwaine from jlgas , Home of the largest Seaside collection ,

All spelling and grammer is his, not mine.

Us good old boys here on the east coast in St. Louis don't consider this to be a business, but a hobby, that is why I don't answer a email the minute it arrives as he feels I should. My feeling is walk in my shoes and then you can critize. Does he know that the week he emailed me my wife's mother died in Kentucky? Does he know that in the middle of summer the city I live in sent me a citation stating I needed to paint my house. At the age of 67 and after a heart attack a little more than a year ago I am out in the 100 degree heat painting my house? Which is more important?
I didn't mention anything to him about charging him for my services, but let's take a look at this. If I pay $100.00 for a brochure and someone want a picture from it, I drive five miles to Office Depot, stand there while they copy it, pay for it and then drive home. Should I then give this away, I don't think a $5.00 charge is too much for this. If this was a business I picked the wrong one. I could make more money being a greeter at Wal-Mart.
He also refers to his "friend" Ron Scobie. Ron has been a friend of mine since the mid 1980s and when I quit telling Ron how to run his business we became better friends. I bring this up because Ron runs a business and sells copies of his literature and I have purchase over $100.00 of it from him.
Gentleman and Dwaine, this is a Hobby and this is a forum, it is not a place to trash each other. If you have a grief work it out between each other, don't post it here.
I'm getting too old for this.

Hey everyone,

The following is MY OPINION on what I've seen on this forum:

I don't think it matters if the participants in this forum are in business or consider it their hobby. The reason we all participate is to share information. Information that can help us with restorations, leads on items we are looking for, leads on buyers for items we wish to sell.

Alot of this information can be considered opinion and should be treated as such. Sometimes it can be considered fact.

I'm sure that some people don't like the fact that a few are using this forum for business purposes. The people using the forum to conduct business shouldn't complain about getting email that results from doing business here.

This is definitely not the place for personal attacks. It is possible to RESPECTFULLY disagree with someone without resorting to personal attacks.

I've seen a few guys show a lack of respect for other participants on this forum. Problems between participants should be worked out privately between them, and not aired here.

As far as I'm concerned we're all here to enjoy this business/hobby/obcession we call petroliana.

Bob

I couldn't agree with Lastgas15 more.

Except for a very few who make full time living from petroliana, this is a hobby. We should all appreciate that so many, including Jack Sim, share freely their experience and knowledge here. We can't expect that anyone will give away anything they have worked to aquire, a porcelain sign or a photocopy of a vintage gas pump manual.

I don't always agree with all of you in your opinions or the way you express them. This forum is here to promote a community for the exchange of ideas and, yes, to sell things to each other. Let's be respectful of each other and enjoy what we have.

Remember when you express a personal opinion about someone here on Shop Talk, it is like speaking over a microphone to thousands of people. Would you say the same thing, in the same way, if you were on TV or at the podium in front of a large group of people?

Well the way I see it, Certain poeple use this site more as a business than anything else, if someone asks a question about a certain pump,if you don,t want to give them a staight up answer, don't reply. Buy my book, is not the answer the person is looking for.If you want to sell the person your book Jack ,email him personally, I don't need to read it in every reply you post,I am not trying to pick on Jack ,I too have his book and it is a good book! But lets get back to helping each other ,not selling every chance we get....... I have absolutely no problen with this forum being used to promote business or to freely share information. I recently had a question that Jack's book answered, had he not responded with how to obtain a copy I still would not have my answer. As long as we respond with respect who really cares if someone is pitching their product, what a better place to learn of what's available. If you don't like a post or if it doesn't pertain to you ignore it. Let's just keep this free of personal attack, I think we all have enough stess in our life.

I found this pump, it doesn't have a name tag on it. What color should I paint it and how much is it worth?

Morg,
You won't be able sell the pump without an ORIGINAL Data Plate, brush painted red, original porcelain signage, and fully operational. Then it should be worth whatever you paid for the signs. At least thats the way I see it.

All I have to say is that when I started looking at this forum, there was just a few hundred members and now it's closing in on 1000!! That tells me that more people are getting interested in this "industry" everyday. I have been able to sell tons of original parts thru Oldgas.com and have also introduced several new customers to Vic's Place. I would also like to think that I have helped a few guys along the way with what limited knowledge I have. Everybody ought to just cut each other some slack and enjoy the give & take that this forum provides. If any of us had the time & effort & money in a project such as Jack's book, we would probably be soliciting like we were running for mayor!! Negative comments about anybody publicly are never a good idea, just look at the bag of snakes it has opened.

It certainly doesn't help when newer people to this hobby, such as myself, come to a forum where everyone is bickering. Slack should be cut to all those involved, from those with an expertise, to those who have no experience whatsoever.

Clarity? Is this forum for all into the old gas materials or for just those into gas pumps? I sometimes get the feeling that some forum members do not like to be bothered with those who have questions that do not relate to pumps themselves. And at times, state that quite clearly. Enjoy!

The answer is found on the main page of the site: "a forum for your questions, specific "wanted" items and comments about petroliana."

Key word is petroliana which is anything from pumps and globes to oil cans and bottles to maps and give aways.

Just ask any question you might have and hopefully someone will have some information for you.
