Wondering if anyone can tell me about a lens I have. It is 16 1/2 inches across has green color going around the edge and has "GREEN GAS" in green letters. I also have two SOCONY 16 1/2" lenses and they were covered in grease is there anyway to clean them? And if anyone can answer my AMOCO drum question I posted. I know... I am asking for a lot. Thank you in advance.

Soak the lenses in a good dose of WD-40. Then use #0000 steel wool with the WD-40 and it should come off. Just keep wiping and spraying and scrubbing with the steel wool. It's extremely fine so it should not damage the lenses at all.

Thank you, I decided to list it as it is.
Would you happen to know what gas co. had "GREEN GAS" on their pump globes? I have a 16 1/2" lens that has green around the edge and green letters "GREEN GAS"?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you Richard for looking. I have searched the internet and all I can come up with is Blu Green gas.
I was thinking maybe Sinclair?
I will have to take a picture and post it here.
Thank you again.

My two-cents......If it were mine, I would hold up putting it on ebay and do more research. You may have a very unique lens. Also, being obscure, you may not have good luck placing it in the right category and it coud be overlooked. How did youlist it on ebay? I mean, by what name or what is the auction number??

Thanks Richard and Alex for responding.
And Alex you are right, that is why I am holding off on listing this on eBay. Need to do more research first then and put it under the right category.
I can't find anything on the internet that is why someone here may know. I keep seaching and just keep on coming up with Blu Green Gas.
My Uncle use to do business with mostly AMOCO, MOBIL and SHELL maybe one of them???
Thank you all again.

This is just a guess as I am no expert on gas companies. I think it is either a minor brand of a company. For example: Laurel leaf Gas in Montana also had a brand called Wildfire.
Or it is a small, regional brand.

Considering that your uncle did business with AMOCO, I think it might be a 'third grade' that AMOCO used. These less expensive grades of gas were widely used in the 1930's up till WW2. You might contact Scott Benjamin to confirm this, as he is a major globe dealer. Good luck!

Kyso and Sinclair were two companies that had a "green" grade of gosoline. I'm sure there were many others too like H.Earl said. These sub-regular grades were more common in the early thirties but continued to be used until WW2.
As far as value goes....IF you can find info that that a major oil company such as Amoco or Socony used that globe then it would be worth much more than if it were used by a smaller regional or independant oil company. "Rare" does not equate to a higher dollar value. It's a very plain lens that wouldn't draw much attention from globe collectors. If you could place it with a certain company, collectors of that company's items would be interested in it.
So far I haven't been able to find any info on it. Best bet is to give Scott Benjamin a call. You also might want to check with the local historical society where the lens was found to see if they have any old pictures of gas stations that might shed some light on who used that globe.
Wanted: Gas pump globes:Sinclair & affiliates, IL companies. Ripple bodies. Anything Sinclair, Stoll, Pierce, 4 Bros. http://www.lastgas15.com/
